well by now you will have read petes account of last night ,we both had a blast ! this particular mark hasnt fished well for myself and george for a couple of winters ,but has done in the past. previously the sea has either been slightly too big or small,or the tide just too big.

the good thing is ,if they are there you get them quickly so no time is wasted waiting on them,as pete found out. as pete says i had the best bite ive had all winter first cast ( i actually thought we would have to wait til it was properly dark as the water was not as coloured as it has been ,due to the tides being smaller of the back of a blow on bigger tides ) and 5 mins later i looked round to see petes rod bent into a good fish ,the look on his face when i lifted it out was a picture !

i had a fish next cast around 2lb ,then dropped 2 on consecutive casts ,small fish that were struggling to take the big baits i think. then i had 1 around 3lb and another at 2.5lb before a wee quiet spell prior to the tide starting to ebb ,when i told pete the mark usually fished better on the ebb i think he thought i was joking, but as soon as the tide started to run the fish came back on.

the next one was a classic ,cracking bite ,but as i had cast between 2 rocks ,the ebbing tide had wrapped the line over one ,so as i pulled the fish i i knew it would jam ,rather than pull for a break ,i cut my line(about 35 yards) ,tied it to my tripod ,then set up again. 45 mins and a few fish later ,i was able to reach the rock and retrieve my biggest up til then of 5 lb ! jammy or what !

i then headed on to a close by rock and pulled 3 in 3 casts ,before hooking my best of the night ,initially i thought it felt like a double ,but as it broke the surface i was sure it would be just shy ,i had judged petes fish to be between 10 and 11lb ,and this one looked about just over 9lb,the scales confirmed it at 9.25lb ,best fish of the year. another 5lber followed ,then a small fish of 1.5lb ,before we packed up for the night.
we returned 5 lightly hooked fish in total in the 1.5lb - 2.5lb range.total between us was around 20 for just over 70lb.

i have to say pete did a brilliant job with his big fish ,as he is relatively new to cod fishing .he fished really well all night and im sure he had as good a time as i did !

so still no double for me ,but i have now seen 2 anglers land pb,s this winter and thats certainly tempered my disappointment at not getting a biggie myself.
i would love to see everyone on the forum get one ,as pete and several others will tell you ,its the best buzz you will get between november and march !
cheers rab

Well done on the fish mate......Did you return any?
2 that were lip hooked ,if you do a thread search on " 8 fish hooked ,7 deephooked ,pics " you will see why its so hard to return cod in the winter ,unless you dont mind wasting them.

well done rab what a catch:clap:a lot of hard work and pleasure by both you and pete.as i said on pete`s post its one thing knowing the marks but(knowing when the wind`sea`and tide are right to fish them is another) its takes a lot of time and effort to master this.:thumbs:great post again its what gives us heart to keep trying.

ps.that fish was more than likely 10 lb just crapped itself when it realised you were on the other end of theline ha ha.
