Decided Saturday was a good shout for a full day out on the boat. We steamed out to the cardinal mark at the start of the bank the new windfarm is built on. We had a number of drifts and picked up some good size macks for bait. Moved further up the bank but by now, the tide was almost slack so we decided to move closer in to the orme and see if we could winkle a few fish out. Oh my dog!! they were like a rash, as soon as the bait was in the water they were on it and then something happened that gave me a hell of a shock, I was cleaning all the blood guts and gore out of the carrier bag the macks were in and tipped the gunky stuff in the water follwed by a newly baited ledger, on the way down, the bait was snatched, and the reel screamed off, I backed off the drag and put the reel in gear, man alive, for the nanosecond before the line parted, it was clearly a huge fish, or a seal? Bitten through the line so switched to a tope rig for the next time with a wire trace but only dogs from then on. Got back in for an evening bevvy at the pub, superb day, I'll definately have a go for tope next time.

Nothing quite like that reel scream and first contact with a decent tope. No need for wire though, heavy mono is fine and won`t damage the fish - Moonfleet do a really good mono trace and great value too.

Those jellyfish are awesome sizes, watching them float by under and around the boat all over the place, there must be a lot of those turtles in cardigan bay coming in for a feed, you wouldn't need many to fuel up for the summer.

Can I be cheeky Menai 1 and ask what you did to catch bass from the boat, I can get them ok from the shore but I appear to be a total numpty on a boat, pm me if you want. My hubby is still a bit frit about getting the boat too close to the rocks, so I rekon we are not where they are, but I am not sure if peeler is a good idea from the boat and if a frozen sandeel has the same appeal as a live one, it comes down to the petrol costs getting live bait.
