Braid backing with mono top shot

I have recently been speaking with a guy who uses multiplier with 40lb braid as a backing and 25lb mono top shot for tope fishing. Apparently it's a method used in Norway..the thinner braid provides more line capacity for tope or shark runs but the mono acts as a shock absorber whil fighting the fish and it is a money saver as all you have to do is replacecthe bit of top shot mono when the rime cohes to replace line.. does anyone else fish this way..usually its mono backing to braid.

Chasing bigger game I often have 50-100m of mono on top of my braid. Even from the shore I have at least 10m of mono as a top shot. This top shot on the shore gives me that more forgiving stretch in the line when most of the shark species will go ballistic when they realise they are about to be up on the sand as well as the added pressure in shore breaking waves. The top shot also gives your hands added safety over braid when handling line and fish close to the shore or boat.

Most of my overseas multis have braid mainline with a mono topshot. For the same reasons mentioned by JonD. Modern multis of decent quality are engineered well enough to withstand a lot of wear and tear and you don't need the heavy metal reels of days gone by which were needed to hold 500m of 50lb mono.
With UK tope though, you could probably get away with just a rubbing leader of 6 metres or less. They really don't pull that hard after the first run.
