I turned down an invite to go bass fishing with a friend at the weekend (he cleaned up ) in order to catch some plaice for a mate at work .
The plan being to use 2lb test curve carp rods(to give them a chance) , 10lb braid and the usual plaice tactics :-lots of beads size 2 fine wire hooks blow lug tipped with squid etc .
Being a hot sunny sunday lazy fishing was the order of the day , so a quick jaunt out of the marina to the close inshore grounds that have produced numerous plaice throughout the summer . Choosing to fish an hour or so either side of high tide to minimise the tide run which turned out to be a good idea .
Within 10 minutes of the first drift a very plaice like bite resulted in a hook up on the carp rod which if this was a plaice it was surely going to give the Uk plaice record a run for its money... After a fair bit of a tussle on fairly light gear and several un-plaice like runs back to the bottom, it became apparrant i was not going to be crowned the Uk Plaice King as an unusually early inshore upper double figure cod came to the surface .
Tipping the scales at just over 14.5 lb this was as jammy a fish as i have caught recently, and maybe an omen of a good inshore cod season to come !

That was a bit of a shock when we met up back at the marina. Cliff did the same thing last year, so there must be more to it than we think. Just goes to show that trecking over the horizon isnt always the best option, and that little bit of ground can throw up some nice fish at times. We are going to give it a proper go on the next big tides just to see what turns up, as we had a few there last winter, but maybe they turn up earlier than we think.

Well played kev.

nice fish- we have had a cod most years just into sept well about half way through, but its always good to see them, and often better to get one when not expecting , the first ones seem to be caught on maccies, live baiting for bass

Hi Tony ,

I agree with you maybe theres a food supply that keeps a few decent sized fish intrested , and being a bit of a shore angler like yourself i like fishing over varied ground inshore rather than half way to france ! . Ive attached a pic of probably the last cheeky mullet of the season caught last night under your bow !

Cheers Kev

Oi Kev......stop nicking my pet mullet. They feel safe under my bow, due to the natural weed growth we cultivate. We saw shedloads of them Sunday morning, and bundles more when we left in the afternoon, so they may be about for a week or two before a cold snap shifts them.

We want to catch the buggers Andy, not treat them to breakfast. Do we lay out a selection of the morning papers, and follow up with a full cooked rather than groundbait???

lol.......you dont believe me....!!!!! try scattering some alongside your boat..
when the mullet get a taste for them..(when the sugar coating desolves they go soft)..they eat them with relish...

Only seen thins in the river this last week. I would imagine the "thickening" in the marina is them getting together ready to spend a long boring winter in a thermocline somewhere. Should be really quite good mullet fishing. If you happen to be "checking your boat" this coming week, I can get lots of bait, sugar puffs or otherwise....... ;)

lol....all i`l say rob is remember the sardine..!!

funnily enough...i remember the odd mullet or two eating the wasted food scraps that got into the sea under the palace pier in times gone by..long time ago thou.. must have been a few non descript `puffs` and `flakes` among the cafe discards then...

There was loads of them Rob. All round the shower block and along the pontoons. Mainly small 2lbish fish with the odd decent one mixed in.
Im up a ladder decorating this week, so I might have to take a break later in the week to check the boat, if you know what I mean. Maybe have an hour or two on the mullet then a few hours on the plaice/bass on Thursday or Friday if im a good lad and get the kitchen done.
Will let you know.
