coasters

Although i am not exactly a newcomer to sea fishing i have recently upgraded my equipment - i am now using a ZZiplex Primo Synchro and a slosh 30 SHA. This has been a massive step for myself as i have always just used a ****y rod and a fixed spool. Getting on quite well with the distance casting but the rod didnt come with any coasters so i have been casting without any , will the coasters make much distance to the power and distance i am getting already?? Any information much appreciated. Also does anyone know of a casting instructor in the angus area willing to take on a newb????
Cheers

Coasters are used not only to hold your reel onto the rod but to aid the grip of the thumb onto a multiplier when you grip onto the coaster with your forefinger. If you use a fixed spool then a reel seat is ideal however they do come into their own when using a multiplier.

Most coasters need to be purchased for that particular rod as they come in different diameters, however the breakaway one is plastic as can be used on any rod, I smooth off the edges of one coaster to prevent it cutting into my finger.

Think you have your wires crossed here. Coasters are simply for clamping the reel to the rod. However they are useless imo, get a fixed fuji seat and dont look back.
Nout wrong with coasters mate! They have been around for years and are a very comfortable, simple and reliable.

Coasters are just glorified jubilee clips. If you really need some sort of trigger, then fuji do fixed reel seats which incorporate a trigger, as do abu.

Fuji don't make a trigger grip reel seat any bigger then 22mil anymore otherwise id probably use them, purely for the reason that if I had a fixed reel seat I would get set up a minute or two faster and in the water quicker.

Its so much nicer to have a trigger to get your finger behind to get a good firm grip when winding up big casts, especially with wet fishy hands.

The Abu griplocks are gash and don't lock down tight enough, They have a tendency to get stuck as people have to screw them down so tightly to get a half decent hold.

The Century seats are OK, but they are just to chunky, and not so nice to hold.

I've always found the bigger reels dont sit as nice with the coasters.
The feel like they want to rock too much and come free.
I would get a reel seat but which one is up to you, I like the Century one but thats just me.
You could always use the clamp supplied with the reel.
Where exactly are you, there is a meet coming up in Aberdeen to improve your casting.

Jim,
Currently i am using the reel seat that came with the rod along with the clamp that came with the reel so i am sorted in that department. Baggin is correct in saying i have my wires crossed as i was thinking that the coasters were simply an attachment to aid your grip for casting.
Based down closer to Dundee - i had spotted the meet up in Aberdeen in may and if work/wife allows i will be there.

Pasty Steve is right that the biggest fuji reel seat with a trigger is 22mm, however i get round this with the bigger fuji reel seats by sliding a coaster on as a trigger before fixing in place. It keeps down the bulkiness of slightly bigger sliding reel seats. This works for me.

I was thinking of trying that, so it would be just the same as the Century jobbies, but not so chunky.

The only downfall with my method is that the reel seat is fixed and cannot slide up or down on the shrink but it works well for me. My reel seats may be fixed in place but they are not glued. I build the blank up with partly overlapping spiral wraps of electricians tape until the reel seat is tapped into place with a tight interference fit. This helps me keep the majority of reel seats at 24mm. Iv never had one move even a mm on my rough ground rods that take a beating from me. If you want to remove the reel seat just tap it off with zero damage to the blank! Jobs a goodun for me.

I think UK Hooks still do the larger Fuji reel seats.

You can convert it simply to a sliding reel seat by making a cut in the reel seet under the underside and putting a coaster (of bigger diameter) over the top. You can then slide it up and down and clamp it wherever you like (just like Century - who use Fujis copies anyway).

Im not fond of the one in the link, as its not that comfy, what id like is a seat like that shown on the V max F1 in the uk hooks site, its a fuji DPS type seat but has a propper trigger, Its similar to the Griplock only it works well! Trouble is, for some reason they dont exist in propper sizes.

I have used Fuji seats for ages now, with a couple of cuts and a coaster to hold it in place and to act as a trigger.

I dislike the Century ones as they are just a cheap copy of a Fuji and soon jam up.

Why they have to put such a cr*ppy fitting on what are premium rods I don't know.

I cant see what is in the link mate, my P.C wont play ball tonight, and is mega slow.

If I click on the link, or even go to the UK Hooks site direct I wait for 5 mins before being told that the web page has expired.

Think ill have to try again tommorow morning.

Hu... Just posted this reply and now I can see a pic of it, was that there before?

Im not keen on those wooky, think ill have to bodge some DPS seats and add coasters.

Although these seats look totally cack, they are surprisingly comfortable, but you need to put two fingers on the trigger to make things feel right. I keep one as a reserve in case one of my seats busts.
Is anyone else having trouble getting onto the UK Hooks site?

They look kinda lumpy and un-comfortable, might have to try and have a feel somewhere.

The 4th picture down in the LINK, is what id like, but there to small and theres no way around that, I cant believe they dont make them for beach rods, although there is one on a 3500 on fleabay, and im sure they have at least a 26mil butt, so they must have made them at one time!

I think those seats were made for Zziplex, but I could be wrong.

No doubt someone here knows more.

I also prefer coasters for two reasons. The first is that I tape half of length of cricket bat handle (6"x 1") onto the rod with electricians tape with the pattern side up, the other half forms a flapper which I use to hold the spool. The second is that my fingers are not a 'standard length' and I prefer the coasters offset to enable a better grip on the reel.

With coasters I never get any reel movement and never get reel slip even in the wettest conditions, Ideal when slinging an 8oz lead and bait out into a head wind for Cod.

The reel seat shown in pic 4 is the fuji 22mm trigger seat that you can get from Hopkins and Holloway. I got 1 last October for my F1 and it cost 9 quid. Go onto their website and you will see it.
