Cod and freshwater

I remember many moons ago (about 40 years to be exact!) fishing right into the confluence (sorry about the posh words) of the ogmore river and the sea at about high water. There was a raging current as the river was quite high. I didn't have a lot of lug so used a whole squid to beef up the bait, the only reason for fishing there was that the sea was too rough to fish the deeps or off the rocks around by the sea front. I remember lobbing the bait in and the 4oz led bouncing away down towards the surf when I got a thumper of a bite I pulled it in to find it was a nice codling of about 6lbs, second cast another! this went on for about half an hour and I ended up with about 8 nice fish between 6 and 8lbs. I have never tried there for cod since but will look again maybe tomorrow, it seems that the fresh water did not put off the cod/ling and the curent seemed to get them taking the bait with a vengance (no pensive nibbles). Being a bit geriatric I need somewhere close to the car!! 40 years have taken their toll!

Wow, what a cracking session!!
Well, cod can tolerate low salinity as they're found in the baltic sea, alongside pike, perch, bream etc!!
So I'd say you'll probably have a good a chance there as anywhere, but I wouldn't think you'll get the same results as you did 40 years ago!
Good luck

That's an interesting story mate, I might try the same tactics there one of these days, sometimes a different method to the norm can produce can't it? I and a mate once fished all day at sker with two rods each all ledgered with big lug and squid baits at varying distances in the hope of a cod and not a sniff of one all day. i then thought I'd chuck out my 7ft float rod with a size 2 Aberdeen on baited with a sliver of mackerel belly, within a minute the float had gone under and line was peeling off the screaming reel, it turned out to be a 4lb codling! That's fishing eh?...
