Had been watching the weather intently last weekend and thought it may be worth a go Sunday/ Monday, by midday I had made my mind up it would be worth a shot, probably not comfortable but definitely risking the elements.

Got to Weymouth about 3pm, went and collected a few fresh wraps and headed off to Ferrybridge to see how it was looking........greated with big sea still running well upmthe bank with a few hours till HW and a monumental shore dump, not looking fishable.

So thought I would head West and see if things were looking better there, got to Abbo just as the light started to go, big shore dump again with occasional waves running onto the second shelf, so set up well back just to be on the safe side, only one other there braving it, quickly got set up and got baits in the water, steady stream of straps, jumbo Pout, Whiting, got bitten of a couple of times by Congers and had a couple let go of Whiting as they got close inleaving them with big clamp marks on them and lost somthing fairly substantial in the shore dump, fished hard keeping fresh baits going out.

During this time a few more nutters arrived to face the elements with the still anti social westerly and a steady stream of head lights could be seen moving around in the distance close to the car park.

About 10 had the first Cod on the beach and an hour and a half later the second, few more straps and Pout before faced with a longish walk I thought I would call it a day and retreat for the night.

Monday lunchtime saw me back at Ferrybridge, just getting a ticket and having a chat with a fellow angler, good to meet you Ben, not sure if your on here or not. We both set off for the long walk to be greated by a much calmer and mild conditions so both decided not to bother with shelters which luckily turned out to be a good descision.

First hour was very very quiet, I had expected a lot of dogs and Pout but all was quiet apart from the increasing shore dump crashing in as the the tide began to rise.
An hour later the rods started to come to life with the usual straps, Pout, Whiting and thankfully only the occasional dog. One good drop back resulted in a good fish which was lost in the shore dump, just saw the top of a mouth in the White water but couldn’t distinguish if it was definitely a Bass or perhaps a Cod.

Around 3ish had the first Cod on the beach

Just before the light started to go had another of a very similar size which was a bit of a struggle to get through the shore dump having to let it take line against the clutch a couple of times with the viscous under tow.

A couple of hours later, a few cups of tea and loads more straps and jumbo Pout Ben decided he was heading off, we had to fish hard with bites and fish coming every few minutes, he had been gone about 20 minutes when I had a good slack liner on my right hand rod, as soon as I caught up with it I could feel some good weight and some plenty of head nodding and taking line in the under tow.

After 5 minutes I had the fish at the back of the shore dump and was just trying to pick my moment to bring what ever it was through it, a couple more minutes and I had it through and in the White water, held onto to it and as the wave receded I could see a cracking Cod, managed to pull it on the leader to the bottom of the shelf then “ping” the shock leader went 10ft from the knot, guess it had got damaged after repeated hammering in the shore dump.

She lay there flapping on the shingle just waiting for the next wave to take her back, I dumped the rod a foolishly ran down the bank, frantically trying to get a finger into the Gill, all I could here where waves crashing behind me, finally I had her an got back up the bank, 10lb on nail ! The bloods mine where I cut my finger on the gill rake !

Carried on an half an hour later had another good slack liner, this was another Cod about the same as the other two bringing the tally to four, I was now out of bait and thought I would quit while I was ahead.

Started the walk back, after about 15 minutes got to the next nearest rod, stopped for a breather and a chat, thought I recognised his face and his voice, turned out to be the guy who does “Fishing Bytes” on u tube, nice guy there with his Mrs, said he had been dogged out unfortunately.

My good mate had been supposed to be coming with me on this Cod sorty but had cancelled last minute and after telling him how good a session it had been he wanted to get out, being short of time he opted for trying for a Flounder at Poole, venue was Holes Bay, nice quiet spot by the dual carriage way !! Any ho 5 hour session saw absolutely nothing, not even the slightest hint of a fish, or a crab either with baits coming back completely intact.

Let’s hope we can squeeze in another session before Christmas
