Yes there has, but very few. Most have been hooked on little pout etc. I hooked one some years ago on a side of fresh herring. Led me a merry dance in the tide before pulling my gear round the pier legs and waving goodbye.
Back in the early 80's I remember fishing a comp up at Sandown castle then going back to the pier for the weigh in.
Laying at the pier entrance was a conger about 6ft long. One of the guys I had been fishing with enquired about it and was told it was caught on the beach on the south side right next to the pier.
I think it went somewhere about 57lbs but migth be wrong on the weight.
