Dogfish. Why such a dislike?

Ok, heres a little rant.
Over the years Ive noticed more and more that people are always complaining about dogfish.
WHY?

I can understand if you set out to target a specific species and catch these instead but why are they viewed with such distain?

I would be over the moon to catch one, especially if it means I didnt blank!

At the end of the day, its a species of fish, it puts a tick in the catch list and its still sport.
I get fed up reading catch reports/mags etc where dogfish are seen as some sort of plague or disease. "I headed out intent on catching .......but those pesky dogs were out robbing my bait"

Why do you care so much? Surely if there are dogs about, that means theres food around and so there will be other species around. Its not the fishes fault if you cant catch the one fish you are after!!

I went out with two mates a few weeks ago, both of whom are reasonably new to beach fishing. There was me, casting two rods, one at distance, one close in and I blanked. While they each used one rod and only cast about 20 yards, each caught a flounder. They were delighted they had caught something and Im sure if they had been dogfish, it wouldnt have made the slightest difference to there excitement.

Rant over....sorry!

excellent post , u answered ur own question though as many anglers are targetting a certain catch ie cod, bass , the doggy, because of its numbers, will usually get their first on the expensive prepared bait , same with whiting . I personally am with u all the way though being a club angler, i absolutely love doggys and the better whiting, many a time they have saved me a blank or scored me some points , i fish for whats there, not what MIGHT be there .

Because they're horrible...

My hatred of them comes from fishing chesil for cod and catching 40 plus of the things a night, meaning the cod don't even get a chance to come across the bait, let alone eat it and get hooked. Often I spend lots of money on bait/ lots of time digging, for it to be wasted on B#####d dog fish.

I dont hate them but dislike catching them but as said they have saved me from many a blank.
Saying that though it doesn't take much skill to catch them and they will eat any bait you put out there. Also they ruin and tangle your line and if your not careful they will have the skin of your hands. I dont know of anyone who targets them intensionally as they are a bycatch scavenger and I have caught over 20 of them on a night session and nothing else gets a chance.

If Im just having a few hours easy fishing just to get out of the house then dogs are welcome but if Im trekking for 45 mins over weed covered rocks at 3am,then losing gear fishing over rough ground fishing for larger fish like cod, rays, bass, hounds etc,the last things I want to see are dogfish, especially when they find your bait within seconds of casting.I have respect for them as a species but at times I hate them too.

They are a pest when fishing for better fish, if I was fishing a match then I'd be glad of them, but as said above they quickly rob bait intended for better species, thus waste time effort and money. That's why I don't like catching them.

I don't know what's worse, a whiting or a dogfish.... Lol!

The sole purpose of a murgie (dogfish, lesser spotted variety) is to pi**ss fishermen, anglers or commercial, off. Edibility? They are a pain to prepare and don't taste that great when you have! If they grew to 100lb they would be great-but they don't!

quite happy to catch doggies , if you think you can sit on Chesil and order the dogs not to touch your precious cod bait then you are deluded ! Whiting of a decent size are no different to a codling so i dont see the problem with them either .. I'd rather get a bit of action from a few woofers than sit there scratching my arse thinking i deserve to catch WHAT I WANT just because i threw some bait in the water.
Even ugly girls need loving, and i bet a few of you have had your fair share of them when theres nothing better about - without whinging :uhuh:

you should fish for them intentionally with a 13ft coarse match rod and a 1oz bomb lead on 8lb braid mainline
Mini shark fishing on ultra light gear , put some fun back in your fishing

I do a lot of lure fishing myself mate , I was just pointing out that a 2lb lsd won't fight on a tournament pole but when they move in on your "cod and bass" baits then a light outfit is the way to enjoy them, half a sandeel and a 1oz bomb on a coarse match rod takes the boredom out of it !!

That sums it up nicely I think.

Get very few dogfish here around the tees to whitby. Maybe 5 reported a year? Maybe 10 not sure, not common at all but getting more. Would love to be able to target them. Have caught plenty in northern Ireland and west coast of Scotland. I don't mind whiting, yet most of our ground is rough and only certain places produce them over the sand/soft. But can be decent size and non stop on a session. We fish the rough for cod you don't have that luxury and fish beaches, which the cod share with whiting.

there boring,
cast tap tap dog on, cast tap tap dog on, its endless no excitement no waiting to see what happens to come along and that sinking feeling after a dog a cast within 2 minutes that its going to be like that all night, monotonus repetative, half the funs not knowing if the next bites going to take an hour and be a decent fish, or nothing at all, but when its dogs dogs dogs wheres the thrill of the unkown the suspense the hoping for the double cod, may as well be a put and take lake full of exactly the same size species fish.
anothr annoying thing they do is take the bait and just sit there. dont wish them any harm tho there back in the water within seconds.

Dead simple, spotty dogs all day long equals a blank, simple as that, if that is all you catch you have blanked :spiteful:

Main reason for that point of view is if you put a cane and bent hook into the hands (paws ???) of a monkey, (or probably the average pot plant) they could catch spotty dogs. Sorry spotty dogs all day = blank :wiggle::wiggle::wiggle:

Mind you straight into a garden shredder on the boat and they make fine chum for real fish :bye1:

Tin hat on :hug::hug:

.....so what kind of venues can produce dogs? I fish the BC and haven't seen or heard of them from most places
anywhere from bossington/porlock downwards. have a few weeks on those marks and then tell me if your not fed up with them.

exactly, dont fight, crap eating, repetitive suck your baits with no bite sometimes and others it just like a scourge. id rather sit there blanking so at least a decent fish can get to my bait unmolested.
