Posting this to promote conversation so we can maybe get the the bottom of if Eels are still on the banned list.

From here http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/recreation/fishing/119393.aspx

You must return any eel (Anguilla anguilla*) or Allis or Twaite shad you catch from any water in England and Wales.
This includes estuaries and inshore waters, to a distance of six nautical miles.
From here http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/static/documents/Leisure/Fish_Removal_Byelaw.pdf

(iii) No person may remove by rod and line any eels or shad from any waters.
And from here though its dated 2010 so I dont quite know if its current now. http://www.anglingtrust.net/core/co...r/download.asp?id=1622&filetitle=Angling+Trust+Policy+on+Retaining+European+Eel

As far as i know mate the eel ban is still in force and any caught should be returned.

i would give the environment agency a ring coz there was talk of a byelaw making illegal to target eels!!! and where its says they cannot be retained this even means in a bucket in a match you must catch and release immediately ....if you get caught they can throw the book at you and charge you for interfering with migratory fish(used to be to protect salmon fisheries) which i think carries large fines and even a custodial sentence!!

I caught eels this time last year at Cliffe near the old fort. Haven't tried for them yet this year.

Eels can be retained live in a bucket for weighing in purposes in a match, but have to be returned afterwards. Plenty of guys out there ignoring the law, but I always put mine back. The eel's demise can be put down to overfishing, netting not only the mature eels, but also the elvers as they run up the rivers and a virus that's wiped alot out.

lets be honest eel stocks are down because they have been netted and fished to deaf for money just like every other fish we fisherman are after have been.nuff said

sorry to blow your bubble mate but your wrong!!!!!

eel stocks are currently down by over 90% and the main cause of this is not overfishing for a change its a virus that has wiped out most of the breeding eels

this is why it is now illegal to keep eels !!!
