I've been hiring a 15ft boat along with a friend to fish in an estuary in Cornwall. We are now thinking we would like to buy one so we could use it at other venues. The one we hire seems ideal for in and around an estuary and harbour and as we do not want to fish outside or in Winter open and small engine seems to suit us well rough spec is:

approx 15ft
completely open
approx 5hp engine
easily launched and towed (I have a big 4x4 anyway)
Budget ideally 3K, 4K max

Looking around it seems an Orkney 16 Strikeliner would be a good choice. I'm after advice and suggestions please, thanks in advance.

Orkney Coastliner/Four40 would be my suggestion. They usually have a 15 or 20 on the back. You don't have to use the extra power, but good to have it there in case you need it. Removable GRP cuddy too so best of both worlds.

A Fishing 16 or an Arran 16 are other popular alternatives to the Orkney Longliner - not much to choose between either of the three - I would go for whichever turned up at the right price/right condition. Whilst a 5 hp engine will power these boats to their max hull speed - go a little larger to around 8hp and you get a twin cylinder engine which runs a little sweeter and will also allow you to reach the boat's max speed (they're restricted by the shape of the hull, not the amount of power) on a lower throttle setting so you get a quieter cruise.
