LIVERPOOL COASTGUARD REQUEST INFORMATION ON PIER ANGLER
Coastguards are urging an angler, who abandoned his gear at West Pier, Whitehaven, this afternoon, to contact them as soon as possible as there are concerns for his safety.
The man, thought to be aged about 30, was dressed in a combat jacket and black hat. He was fishing from the pier on his own and was last seen at approximately 4.00 pm.
At 6.00 pm, the police were contacted by another fisherman, who reported that the equipment had been left at the pier. The gear - a rod, reel, tripod and box of fish was recovered by police officers and taken to Whitehaven Police Station.
Police called Liverpool Coastguard at 6.50 pm to report the possible disappearance of the angler. A search was immediately initiated, involving Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team, Workington RNLI Inshore and all weather lifeboats and St Bees RNLI lifeboat. Police also joined the search.
Sue Todd. Liverpool Coastguard Rescue Co-ordination Centre Manager says:
We are very keen to make contact with this pier fisherman and urge him to make contact with Liverpool Coastguard or police. Enquiries are still ongoing ashore, but as yet we have not been able to track this man down. We are also very keen to speak with any of the anglers who were on the pier this afternoon and who saw the lone fisherman.
