Can anyone tell me if garfish will take float fished, head hooked ragworm? I know they like a fishy bait but just wondered if they will take a worm.

They probably would but I think it would be more the fluttering movement they’d be attracted to.
Mackerel strip is my preferred bait but I’ve had them on squid strip, both cut to try and imitate the fluttering of a small fish.

If you cut a thin sliver of garfish belly you can spin with it slowly retrieving the float. Wriggles like a small sandeel.

A couple of segments from the body of a king ragworm works. Just thread them on to the bend of a size 8 hook and draw it along slowly a couple of inches under the surface.

Never found the need for a trailing length of bait below the hook for garfish. If you fish that way there is every chance they will grab the bait behind the hook.

Even with fish baits I find a cube of flesh on the bend of the hook best. Just draw it along very slowly and the movement will attract the garfish. When you see or feel a bite drop the rod tip to allow the garfish to swim away a few feet, by then the bait should be in the mouth rather the the bill, then you can set the hook!

I spent many hours fishing at the stern of RN frigates at anchor. In the Med, Atlantic and Caribbean garfish were always waiting around the galley gash chute outlet. Houndfish as well, 4' of leaping, snapping "garfish" was quite a handful on a little telescopic spinning rod! Happy Days!

I am told you can catch them on a bit of white wool tied to the bend of the hook, catches on there teeth.
