Well, decided to take out my oldest friends son, Harry, today.

I knew the wind would stop me playing out offshore. So gave a youngster, who had never fished before, the chance to fish from a boat.

What a little star!
Steered the boat all the way from the mooring, out through the Marina to the first Makerel 'marks'.

I set him up with a little 12lb boat rod and reel. Next thing I know, he shouting about the rod shaking!
He only went and hooked three makkies on the first drop:fishing:

I had a couple more, eventually, just to save face!

We then decided to run over to Rock Tow for some Pout action.
These were for Dave the owner of the Tackle Box to give to his cats! Well, he did give us a box of squid and a keyring for Harry.

Baited mini hokkies were dropped down, and the rods never stopped tapping....

To be honest, it wasn't the best of days to be out there. A bit lumpy due to wind over tide.
But, he didn't complain once and even told me it was time for lunch!!
So we ate the sarnies whilst jumping up to reel in more Pout!

For a youngster who has never been fishing before - absolutely brilliant.

For me, the thing that will stick in my mind for a long time, is what he said on the way back to the Marina.

"you know, it really is quite beautiful out here" From a boy who is only 7 years old.

Harry on the fish hunt...

The face says it all really.

I even had him gutting the makkies back in the harbour.

Still not sure about pulling out the guts yet!!!:yucky::yucky:

how clean is your boat..do you actually use it for fishing?..i know why now you keep it covered with the blue tent..just in case dust settles on it..cant be having that..you might have to polish it at sea...andy

Fantastic story of an adventure the lad will never forget! The picture of his delight at steering the boat speaks for itself.

For the benefit of other readers and of course yourself, it is advisable to wear a lifejacket when on the water. Accidents can and do happen and so more and more small boat owners are wearing lifejackets at all times when afloat. The new style ones are very small and comfortable and would at least give an "overboard" casualty some kind of chance. Boys are very impressional at that age and he would have accepted the need to wear a lifejacket at all times if you made it compulsory on your boat.

I reckon Harry will be asking when he can go out again, perhaps it can be navigation next? Hope you have many a happy time afloat!

Regards

(Another) Harry
