When beach fishing I often catch coalies on squid alone. I have also caught a decent bass, but can't remember catching a flat fish. recon you can also catch cod in sea, and other species in lochs, but more often its best when mixed with another bait.

 

Dabs like thin slivers of squid, seen the very odd flounder caught on it. Used to use it as a cocktail with lug for cod when they were about. But squid was the top bait when fishing during hours of darkness for doggies.

 

i agree with dab, dabs like thin pieces of squid. i have seen most spieces caught on squid alone but more caught using it as part of a cocktail. if you are using squid you want to ***** it all over with a knife or hook to release the juices, yum.

I think it works well on the west coast,but only use it in winter in the east coast.

Its none to shabby for skate on the East coast as well mate.

 

squid will catch most species of fish,a tip i learned from a local at anst'er many years ago was to leave the squid out for at least 3 days to smell even more before using as let's face it most bottom feeders would only be eating squid that's been dead for some time.
i went up to scrabbie years back for a weeks holiday shark fishing booked a cottage at dunnet head(aga cookers peat heating)put my squid in the freezer on saturday blew a gale till wednesday then i opened freezer to get the squid out almost puked ,it was faulty, never on! fermenting away for days!, anyway had to get out ,charters wouldn't go out but local potman(english guy!) offered to take me out in his 16ft open boat just out into the bay for 2-3hrs he reckoned his 3 hook ripper set up would well outfish my mankie squid, i didn't take much squid up it was only to catch enough shark bait so i cut it up into small 1" strips fished on a single hook long trace skipper caught 8 cod i caught 23! even in defeat he refused my offer to pay for the fuel,nice people up there! pity about the weather but the fishing makes up for it!
i also used double squid on pennels to catch double figure cod! it's also a bait that refreezes well(as if the fish gives a toss!) so it's very economical,tough enough for casting and resisting crabs so use it!

cracking ray and spurry bait for me also had conger on it

 

caught a wide veriety of species during winter this year on squid this year but it really stank it was frozen and defrosted and then refrozen loads of times

 

i never seem to catch on it. have seen plenty people catch on it just not me. stick to fresh mackerel.

 

long thin stips are good for pollack and mackeral. try floatfishing it and only hook it in one end once. smouthound will hit mini squid along with ray and huss. some lads leave it out for a few days before fishing for bass in a big sea. have had dabs on it threading strips up like a worm on a size 4 hook.
