I think you should go for shimano 2500 exage or 4000 exage both nice solid great reels , load them with braid

 

Hi John, I have exage 2500 on the first rod I bought.
Was thinking 1000, would this be suitable?

 

A 10-40g is on the heavier side of rods and would be better matched to a 4000 sized reel, unless you are going lrf then stick to 2500-4000 reels

 

The rod is far to powerful for line that light, you will just end up cracking lures off all the time.
I have several rods the lightest is rated up to 26g with this one I run 20lb braid and 15- 20lb leader

similar to what i'm using at the moment, I'm tending to use the lighter senko lures these days.

 

Even with 8lb Braid and 6lb Fluro leader?

It will not hold enough line , for the rod you have you need 20 lb braid for bass

 

I wouldn't use anything smaller then 2500 on a bass set up mate, you want something with plenty of power to stop something big,and casting distance , I have a 2500 exage and on a good cast I can see the backing on my spool

 

I agree with the guys above, you need the rod and reel to balance, so the 4000 is perfect. I use these on my heavier rod. On the lighter rod I use a 2500 or 3000. 18 or 20 lb braid on either reel works for me.
The addiction usually gets worse with time...

 

Generally a 1000 size reel is for LRF, so think of casting lures of 4-8g in weight or whereabouts. For the casting weight of your rod, I'd aim for a 2500 minimum, more likely a 4000 size, with braid somewhere in the range of 15 to 20lb.

To give you a real world example, on my Major Craft N-One 10-30g rod I have a Shimano Sustain FG 2500 reel with 15lb Sunline braid; on my HTO Shore Game 7-35g I have a Shimano Exsence 4000 reel with 20lb J-Braid. Both of my set-ups have lighter max casting weights than your rod, and both have bigger reels than you're suggesting. There's a reason that everyone else posting on this thread have recommended similar.... just saying... :thumbsup:
