I have a 60 horsepower out board the trim and tilt lifts up but will sink down after a few hours or under pressure while on the way there doesn't seem to be any hydraulic leaks I can also push the engine back down while it is tilted if standing at the side of the boat the engine will raise to the 9 o'clock position and I can push it down to the 7 o'clock position it then becomes hard I am thinking along the lines of o rings on the manual release or the single ram piston itself I can't seem to find o rings for a 1999 mercury outboard can anyone offer advice please many thanks in advance paul

Hydraulic oil will foam up-that could be why it's actually going up all the way.

Tilt it all the way up, put it on the tilt lock and leave it an hour then check the fluid level.

thanks for reply guys hydraulic liquid is ok and is at the level I have tried putting more in and i believe to prime all is done
is to raise and lower engine which it goes up and down like a good un but very very slowly sinks down after several hours
or when I weigh on the leg :g: could it be the o rings on the manual release valve have failed / perished? and letting
air pass?

It could be any one of the release valves leaking. You'll need to strip it to find out, and it may not be obvious.

Might be easier to grab a working 2nd hand one.

Ouch!

There's (If I remember correctly) some one way valves and an overpressure valve in there. It's a LONG time since I worked on that system, so don't take what I'm saying as 100%!
The overpressure valve is to let the motor kick up if you hit something so you don't (in theory) rip the transom off or fly over the bow.
It could even be a bit of crap on one of the sealing faces. However, if you dismantle te unit, it's more than likely to be impossible to tell which valve is the problem by eye, so it's worth replacing all of them.
