Recently moved to Glasgow from the East coast, was excited about the possibility of fishing for Mullet, having seen reports on here of them coming quite far up the river, a while back right enough. I've had a go at Bowling and didn't even see any Mullet, nor have I when casually exploring the river, although I admit I haven't searched intensively.

Has anyone seen shoals of Mullet in the river recently? I mean from about Bowling upstream? I've seen reports of them as far up as Partick in the past, but have no idea if that was a rare occurrence or just something that doesn't happen any more.

I've seen a few in recent years; either in bays on the Gareloch, or around Millport.

Long ago, they were present in huge numbers. Standing on the old Fairlie pier, you could see shoals of hundreds. We heard they had been netted, but didn't see that ourselves.

Last time I actually caught one was in the tidal water of the Leven - foul hooked on a teal blue and silver!

Easiest time to spot them is on tides increasing in height, from neep to spring, they like to forage toward high tide around the dead seaweed for maggots and sea slaters etc . You can see them better in calm conditions obviously but they still fin about the edges of weed rafts so you will see tail and dorsal fin movement.
I used to live next to an estuary and loved watching them moving around in the water.
