It is pleasing to see a developing interest in catching mullet by fly on the forum.
A few years ago I made the decision to concentrate my swff'ng efforts on catching mullet on the fly. I sought advice from a variety of internet forums but the overriding message was that fly fishing for mullet was a waste of time and guaranteed to drive you bonkers.
Fortunately, the truth is very different and hopefully budding mulleteeers can now access a much more positive message via the internet and erudite publications such as Fly Fishing & Fly Tying magazine.

Below is a link to the report of my attempts to catch mullet in 2011.......please be encouraged to give it a try yourself.

Mulletfly,

I loved your diary and well done on your catches! (And welcome to the Forum/madhouse!).

There are plenty that still believe that mullet are nearly impossible to catch - as you have proved they are not and they respond readily to flies (well, usually!). They can be great fun and a decent mullet can easily strip all of the fly line from your reel and keep you busy for 15 minutes or more!
As you say, for those who have not tried this style of fishing, give it a go - you may soon find yourself hooked!

Cheers,

Kes.

MulletFly, brilliant report. It's nice to see someone giving locations as well as catches. I've a few sorties in the diary for Devon and Dorset this year and mullet on the SWF rod are definitely on the menu (not the table menu, strictly C&R old boy). I took my son down to Torbay last summer and we both looked on in awe in Torquay inner harbour at the size of the Ghosts swimming round in there. There were 3 or 4 easy doubles, probably the biggest Mullet I've EVER seen. If only they hadn't banned fishing in the harbour.

Keep the reports and pictures coming. Perhaps a few fly pattern pictures if you can. Once again great report and great catches.

SCG

That's an awesome season for the mullet and you are quite right in the increasng interest....I am one of those aiming to get a mullet on the fly this year for the first time! I was aiming to use an 8wt fly line (my bass set-up) but note that you mention using a 5wt. Is 8wt too heavy? I could invest in a 7wt line on one rod if needed tho'

Fantastic, thanks. Only last week I was asking on here whether it was possible. Found some clonkers feeding about 6 feet out in a local river (Penryn River) yesterday but only had the lure rod with me. As a very beginner (not really mastered the casting yet) 6 feet is well within my reach and an early fish would improve my confidence in SWFF no end, I will be having my first go with a real fly (as opposed to just practising) soon!

Thanks for the comments gents.
The following pic shows (from left to right) a flexi-shrimp, red necked Diawl bach and a Corophium (mud shrimp).
The Diawl bach features two glass beads, which appear to elevate the standard pattern from occassional success to lethal. The Corophium takes its fair share of both thicks and thins feeding on mud flats.
The flexi-shrimp accounts for all 3 species of UK mullet and, to date, 4 species of mullet in the Med.

Ifonly.....I prefer to use a 6wt rod with floating line for mullet but an 8wt is fine and a good all rounder for the salt. Mullet are rarely line shy in my experience.

Neil777.....Standard approach is to dead drift a team of flies towards an advancing shoal of feeding mullet. If the flies are constantly ignored then introduce a very slow retreive. A faster retrieve can be used for Golden Greys.

Thanks for the info and the pics, really helpful! I had a cackling session in an estuary in south Africa as a kid, using a size 12 shrimp imitation tied with natural rabbits fur and two short crystal flash antenna, had 8 thick lipped to 5lb in an hour, will never forget it! Thanks again and good luck this season, will post if/when I get a chance to get out this year!
