Went down to my local spot (Knap) this morning. Was supposed to fish club doubles comp down Southerndown way, but didnt manage to sort a lift out, and by time got to book in, everyone had left
But turned out to be a good day afterall. Got a call from Patester to tell me brickie, blankerman, wilba, snaggletooth and wilbas dad were all coming to Barry to fish, so met them all down there.
Slight northerly wind made the sea flat calm, and we all started fishing about 2 hours before high water. Baits on offer were rag, squid, macky and black lug.
Well, everyone else was pretty soon into a few fish, and around about high water I was beginning to think I might embaressingly blank on my home patch. Was chatting to brickie and blankerman when I noticed the supro's tip bouncing a little, so went over to investigate,By time I was at rod side, it was bending over....fish on :yeah:
Knew it was no pin whiting immediately, was actually tough to bring in, put a nice bend in the rod. "Definitely a ray"....said brickie as I continued to reel in. Then it surface about 10 yards out.....and YESSSSSSSS my first ever ray (thornback) :yeah:
Not any decent size, but a ray nevertheless, and I was happy with it.Blankerman measured it wing-tip to wing-tip, but I forget the size, so luckily wilbas old man had some digital scales, so on it went....2lb 14 Oz, like I said, only a small one, but I didnt care
Despit it's best efforts to beach itself 3 times, wilba finally managed to return it from whence it came, but it did take a discus like throw to get it to go out and stay out. Cheers wilba
Shortly after wilbas dad had another thorny, but that one was even smaller.
So at end of day, everyone had caught, most had caught more than 1, but not me....just the one fish, but...........it was the fish of the day :yeah:
So, another new species.....and another target met :yeah:
