Hi all i hope your able to help.
When casting with a new reel the bail arm does'nt open properly restricting casting. When i took it back to the shop they said i was casting with the bail arm roller in the wrong place (i had it as i always have had with the roller in line with the rod) they explained that the bail arm should be horizontal to the rod with the bail arm at the lowest point. On all the reels i've had this has never been a problem but the roller lock on this reel does'nt allow you to cast with the roller in line with the rod. Please can you help clear this up.

Sounds like you are putting the bale arm across when the roller head is in the trip position (where the mechanism knocks the bail arm back across to catch the line when you start to reel after the cast) .... not all reels have this in the same place so what you did on previous reels is not neccesarily relevant. If you open the bale arm then start to reel in, at what point is the bale knocked across ... if it coincides with where you position it when you go to cast, that will be the problem - I say problem but it isn't really its just the way they work.

on from blakdogs post , looked at my new grauvell now and found the spot where the bale will trip back when reeling in and as i thought when preparing to cast put the bale over JUST PAST this spot . IMHO lol having the bale roller right by the rod blank could result in a crack off trapping line . Lookin at the bale roller here now its in the ready to cast position and its bang easterly if u like or 3 o clock position , line under finger bale housing clear outta the way

Important to remember that there is a fair bit of variation in the exact point for the trip between models and makes .... the other determining factor is often where the handle is as many FS reels are so free running that the handle spinning during the cast is actually what knocks it back into gear .... I've generally found that having the handle straight down towards the bottom of the body stops most problems ... as does having the reel in anti-reverse. There is a neat trick for preventing it if you have a problem with FS reels knocking into gear but it does involve a drill!
