Doing a strip and rebuild for a.m8, maynot be a m8 much longer then again rod was in a right state, got the eyes hi build etc off polished it, but unsure what to do about the paint it looks grotty but sanding it is looking messy, rest of the rod looks good, also how realistic is a perfect finish, an is there any products or machinery that helps with this

A blow lamp and paint scraper same as I used when I changed the colour of my budgie.

Sorry, you wanted sensible answers didn't you.

I have recently used some Wickes own brand paint stripper, it works a treat on paint, but seems quite mild, without any of the eye watering, stinky properties of Nitromors.
Dont know what it would do to Carbon Fibre, though.

Question... who would paint an unground rod anyway ?

I have some carbon fibre rod bits in my junk box, will give one a coat of the above jollop and see what happens.

Update to above.
I coated a bit of Carbon fibre that had been painted black at about 9.30pm...

I left it coated with the paint stripper working until about 11.30pm, when I cleaned it up, the carbon was undamaged and the paint had been removed...

This is what came off..

Plus some more that was washed down the sink.

The carbon is undamaged, and all paint removed....

This is the stuff..

Hope this helps.

nice one dave, you hear horror stories about paint stripper on rods(maybe by people who haven't tried it),you have just shown us what happens when you do use it.paint has always been a pain to remove for me especially when you want a clean blank to varnish.

Nemesis... an unground blank generally has a lightly pitted surface, scraping it doesnt always get to the lowest level the paint is sticking to.

I have had problems in the past myself with this problem, I didnt scrape it back, just repainted it.
