below is a picture step-by-step explaination of the way i mount crab on the hook, this will stop the bait sliding around the gape and masking your hook point,it will also increase hook ups.
for demonstration reason's i have used a 4/0 hook and a bit of foam to represent the crab.

now just slide crab around the gape and impale on the 2 spikes, whip on with bait elastic, job done :bounce:

seems very long winded to me,and makes the bait unstreamlined on the rig for casting..
i use the tried n tested method of cutting the crab between the eyes to within 1/4" of then back the pass the hook in n out through the now long section of oozing bait secure with elastic.
this gives a streamlined bait that is flowing with scent.

i can see both points, but distance is not really required 90% of the time to get among the hounds up here, even a wide gape hook can get masked by the bait, which is why i guess the 'piggy-back' hook was made....this is just a cheap version of that.

thanks for the replies, forgot to add this is an ideal way of fishing whole squid, jus nick the squid a couple of inch's down from the tail, impale the tale section, fold the spikes down and whip on,provides plenty of movement to the main body of the squid, and paper clips are so cheap it's untrue.

good idea, but I would bend those spikes upwards (the direction of the hook) after impaling the crab. Shy fish tend to mouth the bait first and if they feel the sharp edge of those spikes you can kiss goodbye to them taking the bait.
exactly what i was thinking but the spikes could be a lot shorter and still work. would work for all bulky baits.

i see your point, but considering the point of the hook is well exposed they would feel that also, the spikes in the pic are demo purpose only, you would shorten to suit.
on the shy fish,i have'nt come across a shy hound yet

cant see the point mate but good effort though..

you should match the bait size to the hook used.if your masking the hook point on a 4/0 kamasan then go up a hook size, use a wider gaped hook or use a smaller bait.if a huge lump of crab is hanging off the back of the hook it wont cast as well, and fish wont find the hook point.IMO.

it cast's just as well, and fish find the hook point alot easier than 'stepping up' a size to fit the bait, this is an ideal way of presenting spider crab,as i said earlier, distance up this way is not an issue when fishing for hounds.
but that's my opinion, those who want to try it will not be disappointed, and those 'big hitters' worried about their 'distance' and 'stream lined bait' can leave it,that way they still look good 'on the beach' flinging their little worm 150 yards lol:huh:

I will give it ago but will be after the smallest papr clips I can find so they'll fit through smaller hook eye's.

I leave a 2-3mm tag when I tie hooks on and fish lug as it acts in the same way and sticks into the worm and keeps inn place. Certain knots leave the tag end pointing up to the swivel which allows the worm to be easily slid on but snags on the tag end if pulled back down.

ah!the 'grinner' knot....a good choice for worm,strong knot also:thumbs:

Would rather spend the time it takes to fanny about with the paper clip actually fishing, but as said, good effort!
i suggest that's probably best in your case, after all it is a delicate and time consuming operation that needs a very technical mind and dainty nimble fingers :roll1:....only joking m8:whistling

Just saying, bit time consuming when you could have a bait in the water!;)
depends on how you do things...
1.my rigs are tied and ready to go before hitting the beach,if one hook needs doing then it takes a few seconds,a minute at most.
how many baits can you get in the water in one minute.
2.when i freeze crab i tend to de-shell and whip it there and then, even if i did'nt i bet i could get my crab on the hook and in the water before most people.
so i really don't see your point in this 'time' thing, more so if you have'nt tried the idea,in fact until you try it i can't see how you can comment on it being a time waster...unless you have trouble getting your paper clip straight.:whistling

and to the person who left a negative comment...be a man next time and sign it,to leave it because you view this as a useless time wasting idea is bloody childish....grow up.
