Doubtful its the aerial, when you say not clear why exactly not clear, Muffled, crackling, buzzing ???

 

Is it something silly, like holding the mic too close?
A faulty aerial will reduce your signal strength and hence the range, but shouldn't make you unclear. Unless you've ended up with a very weak signal. More likely a faulty radio.

 

I don't know much about VHF sets, but at work our radios have off days and it is generally blamed on some atmospheric interference by the engineers. Its quite often we have problems similar to yours and that's on a multi million quid radio system.

 

I had similar problems years ago, and it was poor wiring connections.

 

If it transmits fine on low power but not on high- check the wiring connections.

 

I had a similar problem with an Icom 411 which was a fault in the set. What radio do you have?

I suggest you speak to Icom. The problem with mine was filters,whatever they do. I know others on this forum had similar problems with this model.The repair service was superb and no charge even though out of warranty.

 

I just had my filters replaced on my icom at 7 year old. All free of charge what service they give. Took 2 weeks to turn around but the guy was going on hol for a week of that.

 

i had this trouble over a few months talking to others getting worse but recieving was clear couldnt work it out but bought another ariel set it up called the coast guard bugger they answered straight away but how old is your radio has above is it that problem were filters are poop

Radio Is 2 years old, looks like I will return it to icom

 

shot in the dark but have you had a good look at the ariel connection to the radio. ive had similar problems in the past and i cut back the cable and re soldered the fitting to the radio and it solved my problems.
