Respooling question

Hi, I'm new to sea fishing & this forum,it's been a great help just reading through so far. I have coarse fished for a number of years but in all those years I've never had braid on my reel and I'm a bit confused.

I'm about to respool a size 30 multiplier (for trolling) that takes 320 m of 0.5 mm mono with 0.25 mm braid. I think I'm going to need some backing line but what should I use and is there a way of calculating how much of a particular diameter I'll need?

Thanks

Fritz

EDIT: of the backng mean, I'm putting 300 m of braid on

Thanks for the quick reply. I understand that I meant how much backing do I need. I want to put the full 300 m of braid on but if I use too much backing it won't fit & if I use too little backing I'm worried I'll come up short on diameter on the spool
:roll1: As a rule of thumb I'd fill the spool with backing to within a 1/4 of an inch of the spool lip then wind on the braid, unless it thick braid or a narrow spool that should do it. A more exact way is to get another reel or spool the same then wind on the braid, then the backing, then transfer it to the other reel or spool. Easy!:roll1:

My way needs 3 reels. Wind the braid onto the reel you want to use it on. Tie on mono backing and fill to level you want. Then with second reel wind the contents onto that. Then repeat onto 3rd reel. backing is now last thing on the spool, load 1st reel with line and it should be perfect!

 You don't need 3 reels, my way needs 2 or 1 and a spare spool, the same as your way.

Thanks for the replies, I used a spare spool about the same size in the end.

It took about 150 m of 0.45 mono backing to fill it up but the braid's so thin it's only about 3 mm deep on the spool. I thought I'd buggered it up & was going to run out of spool winding it back.

thanks
