I havent done any boat fishing in quite a while but thinking of doing a bit this year. I do have a boat rod but it belongs in a museum (its a Goodwin!) so i may splash out on a new one

Looking at what is on offer is very bewildering so any advice as to what to go for would be appreciated. Although i dont intend doing a vast amount of boat fishing previous experience means i prefer to buy something of fairly good quality rather then a outright cheapie but without going state of the art. I would hope to get change from ÂŁ100

As i have no one specific type of fishing in mind Im looking for a general purpose kinda rod that will be be suitable for a wide range of fishing from clean ground fishing for plaice to wreck fishing for pollack. Nothing too light but dont want a broom handle either! Grateful for all suggestions

Many thanks :)

Hi Nigel,

I rekon you would not go far wrong with an uptider. These are excellent rods for all sorts of boat fishing. With it you can uptide, downtide, use it for wrecking,(they are an excellent rod for lure fishing) and if required, they can also be used as a beachcaster. I have also used mine from piers and rocks.

On the other hand if you want to stick with a dedicated boat rod I would look no further than the latest Daiwa Kenzaki boat rods. There are 4 in the set, ranging from 6 - 50lbs. They all come in two equal halves and are a pleasure to fish with. They are light as a feather and easy to transport. I have the 6-12 and the 12-20lb. All models can be bought for ÂŁ90 each.

Spend as much as you can afford and a little bit extra, it is well worth paying out for a quality rod.

Cheers

Hi

I recently bought a Fladden Maximmus 2 pice boat rod, the 12lb class, and I have to say I am very impressed with it.
They also make a 6lb, 20, 30 & 50lb models.

I have yet to put it under a heavy load, I wish :uhuh: , but the bite indication seems good and I am now looking to get one of the 6lb models.

They are a reasonable price at around ÂŁ45 - ÂŁ50 depending on model.

At the end of the day the fish can't see what rod you are using but I think the reel is more important. So with a ÂŁ45 rod this leaves you ÂŁ55 for a reasonable reel.

Just my thoughts, good luck on your search.

Dave

The new Fox Bass Master is a great all round rod. 8'2 with a 12lb tip so very sensitive but a 30lb butt for when you need a bit more power. Costs about ÂŁ60.
I have always used an uptider for most of my fishing but will now be using the Fox rod.
