how do people get around the feet on most tripods as they are 99% of the time sand spikes on the bottom

what have you got on the bottom of yours for when your fishing on piers as it wont stand on the spikes..

any little diy tricks or tips like.. clip on bait tub holders, lights on tripod

and now the main question is which one do i buy

do i get a cheap jobby off ebay for ÂŁ20 or put the extra and go buy a decant one from the tackle shop
theres a daiwa one second hand in the shop round the corner from me for ÂŁ30 but its litrally brand new

get some pics up lads of the bits you have made yourself :roll1:

Ian Golds Suparmatch. Get the DB1 version if you can afford it, it comes with all the add ons. Leg-lock kit, trace bar, foot stand to push into soft ground, plus many more. Its a fantastic piece of kit, you can't go wrong.

Buy cheap and buy twice!

Cheers, Joe

well here is the thing i had a goldies for twenty odd years loved it went out a braught a mti loverly bit of kit with some minor alterations ie the stupid leg locks are a pain as u cant alter the angle of the rest and another prob is weights a ton not good on long journeys and be carefull if u hit a stone when pushung into the ground the end of the internal spike turns over and then you lose the adjustable bit so in short it stays in the shed most of the time and my goldies is back in full time use wont make that mistake again so golds all the way for me built to last and still going strong after 20 years of use

stop!!:eek:hmy: don`t do it :rtfm:you`ll only end up crying:cry: the diawa looks robust but falls to pieces in a matter of months:dry: leg locks get weak and the head rests become very loose i made the mistake of getting one, it is now skipped get the best you can afford:thumbs: either a salt or ian golds 7ft with a leg locking kit and a trace bar on the trace bar you can put a cheap cree headlight on using stainless nuts and bolts lol but your decision :shutup:you have been warned :thumbs:lol tight`uns

Agreed the daiwa one is nasty crap that will ruin you sessions. Mine got so much wobble in the head and cups that i couldnt tell which rod had a bite as they would both wobble about. Dont buy it! Get a golds or the parker deluxe is an all metal version of the golds but without all the cheap plastic rubbish to break

sent from my new GT I9100 As some little scroat robbed my last one

anyway something i forgot to ask when i posted this is what to people do when using there tripods on the pier or hard ground as iv noticed most have spikes on the feet so how do you all get away with it

and suggestions more than welcome want to hopefully pay for a new tripod by saturday night so i can use it monday but i just cant get my head around which one to pick i left the daiwa after reading the above comments glad i didnt buy that :D

well i got one ian gold sm 25ÂŁ collected if ur local just dont get used enough by my nephew anymore

though regarding tripod i reckon it depends a lot on the rods u tend to use
the ian golds is a cracking piece of kit with respect to weight and stability up to 14ft rod, it only fails when the rod lenght are 15-16ft then probably leg kit come in play( which i never had)

i prefer my mti, rather carry a bit more weight than feel sorry with broken rods :bangin:
mti is very stable prob the best when it come to stability , having own the salt, ian golds and the mti. oinly downside is it weight a ton

Ian Golds gets my vote but with mods, I fitted a pair of telescopic front legs from an old tripod. This gives it the flexibility to remain stable on uneven ground. Forget the leg lock kit get the Imax hammock, this is one of those things once you have one fitted you wonder how you ever managed without it. I also have my bait needle carrier taped to the leg so I always know where it is

I bought a ÂŁ20 telescopic Parker with cup then added double head! It's good when weighted down on beach but I have trouble with it on rocks! Always falls forward! Back leg lifts up! Might have to make a leg lock kit for it ;)

Tripod modifications..

A lot of years ago when I first started making tripods... pre " Golds" they were made from timber, still pre Golds I made my first alloy tripod, for Barbel fishing in shallow rivers, then I moved on to making tripods for beach and rock, I am always tinkering with them and this is my latest, well, a couple of years old now..I have never bought a commercially made tripod as I they just dont do it for me..plus I am a tight Yorkshireman and dont like laying out cash.
In the pics you can see that I use all sorts of bits and bobs to fabricate what I want...this tripod has captive bolts and wing nuts so that they dont get lost on the beach, I also use bits of bath plug chain to secure the leg lock thumbscrews, the actual leg lock sliding fittings are made from the top plastic bits from extending clothes props, I found two rusting in a skip, and liberated the bits..the leg lock bars are made from perspex from a shop display, the stainless top bar from a scrap yard...stronger than alloy, the rod but cups I found on a building site in Spain, dont know what they are really, the top rod cups are actually a couple of used coat hooks turned sideways and covered in foam and electrical tape.
The front trace bar is made from perspex with a bit of bath panel plastic forming the trace clips..It is fastened to the frame using some stainless pipe clips from an electrical shop.
I bolted on a freshwater rodrest butt grip to the tripod head as when I am changing rig I prop the rod against the top bar,not bothering to put the rod back in the rest, the rod rest grips the rod and stops it falling on the sand.
The usual plastic pipe clips are used to fasten the extending front legs to the rest. I had to modify a couple of extending bank sticks for the legs, as they didnt have the length , and they extended the wrong way if you know what I mean. There are a couple of other mods as well, that can be seen on the photos.

A few weeks ago my waterproof salopettes gave up the ghost, and not wanting to chuck them away, I cut them up, sewed them up on the family sewing machine and made the tripod tray, it rolls up very small , takes up no room and is occasionally useful.

So... Here it is.....

Will post a picture up of mine that ive modded(so chuffed with myself when i finished it, lol) I lengthened the top holders so two rods are now splayed out nicely, added a clip to the front leg to take a torch and the best bit of modding is the plant pot tray ive fitted between all three legs to hold bait, knife, chopping board and it keeps the legs in the same position when moving it up the beach
