Hi everyone

Here is the long awaited report from the Hoe, Hoe, Hoe

Arrived Saturday via my gorgeous chauferess Suzi at around 3.15 and was fishing by 4pm. It took me a while to find my feet and really get to grips with the rough ground, but alll in all only lost 5 sets of gear all weekend. Not bad really considering I have lost more at Dungey in one night.

Fridays sea state was very choppy and speaking to anglers as I arrived the outlook of a good weekends fishing was not on the cards. Set up and fished at lifebelt 14 until it got dark then moved to the Dover end and fished on the sand then moved back to belt 14 in the early hours.

Thats where I fished covered now onto the fishing

Bait

Mackerel
Sandeel
Peeler
Ragworm
Frozen Blacks

The top bait was Ragworm from D and A Angling Rainham. A top, top product at £4.50 a score fresh dug beautiful Ragworm and the aquarium fish loved it.

Friday evening saw me land my first Wrasse of 2012 (i never tire of the colours of these fish, the same species and so many different colours) in the light and then it was dead literally until 2 hours before High Water when I landed 2 largeish Pout and Pollack (well large for the weekends fishing lol). most came to the Ragworm although a couple of fish fell to mackerel strip. I did catch a few small pout which were promptly use as live bait which did not work apart for the crabs. However over the top of the tide a pout that had died after being used for live bait was left on the bottom as a huge tempting morsel for a big fish which nearly came by way via what I considered to be a small strap conger.

I turned to see my rod bouncing up and down hard like only a decent fish could. When I went to retrieve the bait it was stuck fast (not the lead just the fish) it would give then it would seem to curl up tighter causing the rod to thump down hard. I wish I could say I landed the fish but alas the fish got the better of me and I lost the lot. arrrrgh. that was the most excitement that anyone had all night. i fished until about 6 then kipped for a couple of hours and resummed fishing at about 8.30 am ish.

During the night the wind had settled down and the conditions looked much better for a good days fishing.

The Sunday was much better and I had a steady stream of aquarium sized fish all day (probably 50 ish from 8.30 am to 4pm Sunday) No big fish despite my efforts of live bait pout, mackerel fillet and big peeler baits. Peeler was a waste of time not a touch all weekend apart from other crabs eating it.

The weekend was not a complete waste as I learned about a new mark, the weather was good and added to my species list.

Catch

Pouting
Pollack
Ballan Wrasse
Corkwing Wrasse
Rock Goby (it is a shanny another first)
Tompot Blenny (my first ever)
Dover Sole (caught over rocks on the top hook of a three hook flapper)

4 of these are new for 2012 so not all was lost despite no big fish.

I will be definately returning to the Hoe for another session as it is great fun for a different type of fishing.

the 'rock goby' looks like a shanny or comon blenny ; it has the continuous dorsal fin that gobies do not have...the next wrasse after that pic is a corkwing as is the one on the right in the previous pic
Hi thanks for that will update my post

The Hoe is a great venue and not be feared now adays. I first fished it when it opened it was a nightmare then,
but over the years the shingle and sands and filled in a settled.

Paul a couple of more trips down there and you will be a "Hoe Pro"

Hi Lee

I did lee and had the bigger pollack on it but should have done it more, tried it with mackerel and live prawn but no joy. Ragworm is the best bait by far and produces the fish.
