Decided to fish Sandhead on Saturday night. Dug some lug and with the wind directly in my face, but not too strong, my hopes were high. Fished 2 rods with fixed sppol reels, one loaded with 20lb braid and the other with 15lb Red Ice. First rigs tried were a pennel with 3/0 and 1/0 and flapper with 3/0 O'Shaughnessy hooks. Bait was live lug tipped with sqid.
First cast, NOTHING, same 2nd and third. So, I changed to 1 up/1 down rigs with 3/0 O'Shaughnessy hooks.
Next cast, this came to the shore.
Another couple of blank casts , and there was a good tug on the rod and I reeled in a nice bass at just over 3lb(second from top)
After I had cast back in, the other rod went to the side and the little bass came in at just over the 2lb mark(bottom)
About 15 minutes then passed when the rod went away to the side again and the next bass was soon on the shore, weighing in at 3lb 2oz.
Then about 10 minutes after this, the tripod shook and the rod bent well over and the line shot away to the left. I knew this was the best fish of the session and when i saw it, i was delighted, however, I couldn't get it to go over the 5lb mark(4lb10oz)
I had another couple of flatties after this, but just wee ones. What a great night that was. The fish were kept in a bucket with a battery air pump and after the team photo, the 2 smallest Bass swam away strongly. the other 2 have now been devoured. I gave the flattie to my mate, who couldn't make it this time, but has sworn to get out there the next time I go, Which, hopefully, will be very soon.
For the record, most fish were caught on the BOTTOM hook of the up/down rig. Hook lengths were 30cm long.
