Decided to fish Sandhead on Saturday night. Dug some lug and with the wind directly in my face, but not too strong, my hopes were high. Fished 2 rods with fixed sppol reels, one loaded with 20lb braid and the other with 15lb Red Ice. First rigs tried were a pennel with 3/0 and 1/0 and flapper with 3/0 O'Shaughnessy hooks. Bait was live lug tipped with sqid.
First cast, NOTHING, same 2nd and third. So, I changed to 1 up/1 down rigs with 3/0 O'Shaughnessy hooks.
Next cast, this came to the shore.

Another couple of blank casts , and there was a good tug on the rod and I reeled in a nice bass at just over 3lb(second from top)
After I had cast back in, the other rod went to the side and the little bass came in at just over the 2lb mark(bottom)
About 15 minutes then passed when the rod went away to the side again and the next bass was soon on the shore, weighing in at 3lb 2oz.
Then about 10 minutes after this, the tripod shook and the rod bent well over and the line shot away to the left. I knew this was the best fish of the session and when i saw it, i was delighted, however, I couldn't get it to go over the 5lb mark(4lb10oz)

I had another couple of flatties after this, but just wee ones. What a great night that was. The fish were kept in a bucket with a battery air pump and after the team photo, the 2 smallest Bass swam away strongly. the other 2 have now been devoured. I gave the flattie to my mate, who couldn't make it this time, but has sworn to get out there the next time I go, Which, hopefully, will be very soon.
For the record, most fish were caught on the BOTTOM hook of the up/down rig. Hook lengths were 30cm long.

Great :clap3: You wont forget that session for a while.

Steven
No, I won't forget it till I better it, if that's possible. Isn't it always the way, the last minute decition(spelling) sessions are usually the best. I usually spend days watching the weather and tide times, plan everything with military presition(spelling again) etc and never have nights like this. This was a spur of the moment thing.

Days like yours make us all go back again and again, drives me nuts now when im not fishing. Ive caught loads over the last few months, it still feels the same each time i go back. I cant get the rods etc set up quick enough. Think i need a boat not a house, don't think the wife would be very happy. When are they ever happy lol. Good luck Alec.

nice fish but i wouldnt have went into great detail on were you got them
Well, My fishing has to be arranged around my wife's days off. I just happened to be there at the time and decided to get out for a few hours. I won't be back for a couple of weeks now, so if I can help somebody else get some fish, that's great. It's not a secret mark, I fished there when I was a wee boy and it fished well then too. Good luck to anybody who gives it a try.

last guy who posted exactly where he was found a gill net across the beach the following week. that was in the spring.
there has been police involvment with anglers and gill netters clashing over them netting where anglers fish just a few miles away.
post your catch results but don`t post the exact location. you may have caught when you were a boy but if the hobby netsmen decide to like your mark that may be it.

i know, it won't happen here its been like this for years. all the other marks said the same.

last guy i know who posted about a mark now has netsmen on it every other week. bass offers a high price.

Hi Alec, What a great session, cracking fish. I remember the buzz I got reeling in my first Bass, 2lb. Were you on holiday at Sandend, I take it it`s Sandend on the Moray coast.
No, It's Sandhead, Wigtownshire. I used to live there, and still got relatives there and in Stranraer, so I go there a lot. I caught my first bass there when I was 8 years old. That's a couple of years ago:secret:. I've never been fishing as far up as Sandend, but maybe some day.

How do you know I'm not lying about the exact location:)? If gill netters want to try it then fine, they may be wasting their time and money, then again, maybe not:g:. There are no photos of the location. It's a huge beach, maybe they'd like to cover it all.

I too had a good night on luce bay saturday night, a couple of schoolies and one at 5lb, the surf was perfect, im supprised we never saw you when we went to dig lug, we only had a short session, 1 hour down 2 up, my m8 had to get home

Glad you had good sport, i dont kow if people would get away with netting there as the slip ways are in constant use, this would be costlt to everyone, boats, shore anglers and the netters themselves

I didn't see anybody else on the shore. I was going to try fishing the wee rocky patch just down from the football pitch. These rocks never used to be there, they've just appeared over the last few years. It looks like a nice wee place where predatory fish might hunt. I think I'll give that a go the next time. The only way to find out is to fish it and see.
For the people who are concerned that I've given away the mark, I've asked that post #7 be removed. I'm sure Millser will do it when he gets my pm.

Thanks for clearing that up Alex, it would have helped if I read it right the first time. sounds like your Sandhead is a similar beach to our Sandend, but probably just a tad better LOL
