Can anyone give me a run down on what the 3 letters mean that follow all the shimano range of fixed spool reels :wacko:

Hi ,

it's a bit more complicated : the first XT's like ultegra XT or Aero technium XT had a strandard (slow) drag knob ; then came the XS... A,B,C range with a so called "instant drag" (in a bit more than one turn of the knob from maximum drag to full open) ; the XTA , XTB and XTC have as said a baitrunner front drag knob .

Thanks for your input lads,
I was thinking it may have had something to do with their purpose, i.e the S perhaps referring to Saltwater use
There's quite a few out there that mention 'Carp' and I don't want to be taking 1 of them to the sea if it's not suitable
After B in Ci4 and C in non they dropped the Baitrunner cap/drag so just Carpy you can't see me Black is only difference.
Ci4 which has different body and rotor material Ci4 wonder "Plastic"! meant to be better gearing materials and more bearings than non ones they use a letter back ie B where as non/normal/standard use C but have same Gene pool!
The Ci4 A's was tough didn't have some of the more fancy bits though like screw in handle/bail lock but better body.
Ci4 B's are around one of the nicest balances the C Standard was a bit more flimsey though but ok.
D non/Ci4 C is a different reel/spool system using the later low drag knob been some issues with drags on non and build quality isn't so hot as seen then with mismatching on casings.

If have the cash and can find for right price once Boris say's Go! as many places are offline and others rinsing our pockets with prices go with the Power aero ive the XSB but the T is same just black much stiffer body than ultegra like another level to it there made in Japan opposed to Malaysia

the Speedcast and Speedmaster are just ultegras with ball bearings replaced on much with nylon bush bearings so can upgrade to ball bearings if one comes your way for right price? plus only one spool

They're suitable mate - I use them on the NE coast, including for rough ground fishing. They're all big pit carp reels but there is no problem using them for sea-fishing.

So what does XSA Ci4 Stand for?

Means not for "dogfish" you get an electric shock if catch doggies or rays the little Ninjas inside the reel escape and come chop holes in your car!:p:whistling::D

non baitrunner,A version with forged gearing and Ci4 body and should have two spools! but if has a dark grey body becareful as Haggis will chase you if in Scotland known to eat your rod also.

Shimano do not make reels specially for Carp fishing. All their “big pits” are surf reels. Change the marketing and paint them black.

If you ever get a chance to look at the Japanese Shimano catalogue you’ll know what I mean.
So what is the the big baitrunner LC if not a big pit reel designed for carp fishing my old man has 3 for carp fishing all labelled as big pit reels.
Also make big pit spod reel and the spod was conceived through carp fishing.
