After 2 recent blanks (not even a bite) on beach at night and west arm.
Decided to try east arm this morning armed with Black, slipper, rag, mackerel, squid & lugworm. Left it 4 hours later you guessed it without a bite.
Only fish I saw was what looked like a whiting being swallowed by a cormarant.
Didn't look like 3 chaps on west arm were doing any better.
After giving up & returned to car was chatting to 2 guys opposte carrots found they had fared no better. At least their reason could be explained by the fact that a seal appeared about 30yds off beach.

Please forgive me if I am wrong but I guess from your surprise at blanking that you are not familiar with Winter angling from the Sussex shore. Basically you will 9 out 10 times catch nothing between mid December and March in clear seas during the day.

Have only been fishing around here for 40yrs. Cant remember 3 trips without a bite. Only today was clear and sunny. With the wind swinging round to NW would have thought i would have had at least a flounder on slipper on east arm.
Was even more shocked when fished by Church of GS about 3 weeks ago at night and not even a whiting.

Apart from last saturday night I've fish the West Arm every saturday night since early August and have caught nothing except POXY whitting and the odd schooly, and my mate caught a decent flounder.

I agree with one of the previous replies about the time of year and the cold snap etc, but standing in the cold looking out to sea on a very cold night beats a cosy night in watching Xcruiating (crap) factor!!!

So tomorrow, do I buy some bait or do I watch XF final??

I'll give it ago as Nor westerlys are forcast instead of easterlys, so maybe a slightly better chance?

It's going to be a great day on Saturday as the SAS have their Winter Solstice Cup on the West Arm - and they always order the weather in advance:laugh:
Great day to watch some of the better anglers scratch fish out and more importantly see how they achieve it! Like I said 6+ degrees - should feel positively Carribean!

I have a feeling that scratching is exactly what we'll be doing...Just as long as its fish rather than our heads...
