Skate fishing around Oban - costs and expectations?

Hi folks,

looking for a bit of advice about the cost of skate fishing and what to expect from your boat and skipper for that cost in the Oban Area. Me and a friend (maybe 2) are keen for a weekend on the west coast to do a bit of shore fishing for rays and other such fishy delights!

We would love a day afloat looking for the skate and I was wondering what we should expect to pay, per head for the privilage? any help, advice and/or recommendations would be awesome. Or if there is anyone that would be willing to take us out that would be even better.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

cheers

Mikey

speak to sultzer on here he can give u an idea, but expect to pay £50 per person for a trip, minimum 8 persons.

its expensive but so is the fuel for the boat.

you could try andy jackson on loch sunart and hire a self drive boat
thats about £95 a day.for the boat.

u drive it u fish from it.

ok
i use Mv Cregallan - colin currie - price is for boat is roughly £50 per head max 8 anglers for skate - check my webpage you'll see the skate there .
but there is also ronnie campbell another good skipper .
but you will need to hire the whole boat for skate
All gear is provided .
On yer marks do a easter skate month march/april roughly £240 for the boat these are smaller boats from crinan
North star from crinan is another good boat
Vespaman stated the self drive boats at sunart .

in my opinion i have never met a bad skipper yet for fishing for skate

Thanks Guys, great information and a lot to review and take in.

As there is only 2 maybe 3 of us, would it be up to us to fill the charter or would the skippers be able to fit us in to a group of folk that haven't fully subscribed or vise versa? very keen to do it and happy to pay £50 - £75 each a day but couldnt afford the full wack so would be ideal if we could fit in with another group to make up the numbers and bring cost down. as always any advice and assistance is greatfully received.

cheers

both of the above are highly recommend and deffo worth a call-they will give you all the info you need re-tackle ,bait, prices ,places available-get the info straight from these skippers and go with local skippers and 1st class boats with 1st class skippers.

ronnie campbell- 01631 750213 or 07721640024

north star-archie or sandy- 07713038720 or 07789071188

tea/coffee available and everything you need in comfort. good luck and enjoy.

tbh-best not hire small boat and go yourself if you,ve never done it before -these fish are big and need to be handled properly-without capsizing the small boat of course lol.enjoy -you,ll love it great day out.

while you are fishing for the skate can you fish for anything else at the same time or is this a stupid question haha cheers allan....
will sometimes allow one general rod down depends on tides for causing tangles with the skate rods and guys can have turn around sharing it if they wish then a chance of thornies, dogfish, blackmouth dogfish, spurdog.
good chance of conger on the skate rods to.

You can fish smaller baits for other species but this can lead to tangles as mentioned above. This happened to me when I was out in Dec and a bad tangle can be expensive if a few hundred feet of braid and a few sets of end gear get lost. The skipper will keep you right though. Small tides the weekend your going too so I'd imagine you should be able to. We had LSD, thornies and a conger when I was there. Only the LSD on lighter gear though.
