Pulley Pennell, short hooklink, 2/0 Varivas Big Mouth Extra on the bottom and a 3/0 Varivas circle on the top hook of a pennell, my hooklengths are about 18 inches long at most, and made out of 80lb mono (helps against the abrasiveness of the skin and mouth, but also means I dont have to change my hooklength all the time). Fish are 99% of the time hooked in the top lip on the circle hook, and not lost one since I changed over to the rig 2 years ago

Any rig for them out here they arnt a fussy fish, 20 lb braid with 20 lb leeders and 4-6/0 hooks on hounds up to 50 lb. I find the lighter tackle you can fish the more you catch.

You want F'kin dog knotting for using braid on hook lengths,to the O.P. follow which ever advice you choose, just make sure it's strong end tackle and the finished knots are good.
N.B. Forget the bit about 6/0 hooks:wallbash:

Take a note that Jon lives in Australia, and the hounds down there often reach 40-50lb in weight, so a 6/0 hook wouldnt be too big for them, and he mentions using braid as a mainline, not as a hooklength. I agree to not using 6/0's in this country, but learn to read others posts before criticising them.

To the OP, as long as your end gear is strong, try and fish as light as you can for them....had some amazing fun on a light spinning rod last year, 20lb braid mainline and 80lb hooklength, the first run is electric :)

"Peter could achieve so much more were he to concentrate" These words are ringing in my ears, sorry for not reading and digesting before commenting,I stand by the 6/0 hook bit though.

Thats ok, we are spoilt over here compared to my days of living on the IOW. Over here Ive downsized most of my gear since my UK fishing days but the fish are way more plentiful so you get more chance to experiment. The 6/0 hooks are heavy duty mustad demon circles which are surprisingly small.

I snorkelled with my daughter after school yesterday evening and she managed to catch and release two sharks by their tales (releasing them after) these are just small sharks about 15kg but a fun way to catch them. Chasing down sharks on snorkel gear is really good practice for building up breath hold time.

Sorry mate, was having a crapper of a day and my words came over a bit ****ty, I do apologize. I do agree in this country that 6/0 is probs a bit OTT for hounds though :p

And yep Jon your a lucky man!!! Must visit my relatives down your way soon (or thats the excuse anyway.....)

We went for a fish on the beach last night but didnt stay as the fish were very quiet, we only got a couple of rays and one small shark about 4 kg.

This one is from a session where I took a couple of guy's who had never caught a fish over 1 kg, they ended up catching 8 hounds among other fish in a 2 hr session. I do still miss fishing the UK, theres something about fishing where you were born and bred.

Not sure about the UK but around the full moon is the best for beach caught hounds here.

Mate Im from the IOW, I just moved here for the fishing as well as marrying a girl who worked in a brewery, how could I say NO.

The crims all work in Government now just like in the UK!

I get the **** taken if the Australians do well in sport form this side and the same if the UK does well from your side, best to sit it all out in my boat.

Great to be member on here to keep up with the catch reports, love the site.
Cheers JonD

Some lovely fish there fela thanks for posting the pics im from south wales so ive never been abroad. Lol I like to see what people catch in other countries might inspire me to leave wales one day!!
The UK has got some fantastic fishing, though the wrecks cop a bit of a hammering compared to when I fished them 30 yrs ago. Threshers, porbeagles etc are pretty good sport, any fishing is good sport if you fish light enough but Ive noticed people tend to fish very heavy on this site these days especially when it comes to braid.
