I haven't been sea fishing for about 10 years so I decided to go to Holyhead Breakwater for some comfortable fishing to get back into it. Size 6 hooks with strips of squid and lugworm dropped down the side for mini species was the plan. I got there about 9am which was 2 hours before high water and missed a load of small bites which I'll put down to rustyness having not fished for so long. About an hour before high water the most unmissable bite came as my rod was nearly pulled over the top of the rod rest. I struck it and assumed I was playing a big ballan wrasse. It came to the surface and I had the shock of my life, it was a big bass. I had to try and guide it over towards the steps because there was no way I could lift it up the wall on my light gear. I used the waves to beach it on the steps whilst praying the tiny hook didn't fall out of its mouth. I ran down to get hold of the fish but it flipped and was back in the water and was off for another dive towards the snags. Eventually I landed it and got it on the scales and they read 7lb exactly. The fish was returned safely after I got a few pictures which don't do the fish any justice.
After that I fished for a couple more hours and had 3 wrasse and then I packed up for the long walk back as the wind got up.
It's safe to say I'm absolutely hooked on sea fishing again because you just never know what you're going to catch. I know just how lucky I am to catch a fish like that, I was in the right place at the right time thankfully
