Judging by the pollution content of the atmosphere, I believe we have arrived in the Scottish section WSF of late.

I will admit to using the odd spur as skate bait but if i do it is always a Sm male fish and usually about 3lb no bigger ! I also fish and tag spurs and have had fish to 17lb. We never tag anything under 7lb and i have never seen anybody take a fish of that size and kill it. I prefer to use Mackerel, Coalfish or Squid but on the (very) odd occasion when you are just getting plagued by spurs and your Skate baits are getting chomped in minutes its the only thing that works. I will probably get grief for posting this but im not afraid to admit it. I catch loads and loads of spurdog throughout the year and always make sure they are properly held, tagged and put back.

Im prepared for the incoming

I don't agree...............
Publicising things normally always leads to increased awareness.........

I could not have suggested that any better than you did.

*ok a little lie* from a similar topic :hammer:

IMHO this is most certainly the CORRECT place for any angler to voice their thoughts and ask for replies.

There will always be both sides to any discussion and just because both sides of the discussion do not agree makes it neither correct nor wrong to post the topic in question.

How else, without discussion can narrow mindedness evolve to demonstrate a greater knowledge and degree of understanding relating specifically to the topic in question.

Many mindsets have been changed throughout history by listening to others in open discussion. It can happen within this forum if any point raised is replied to in a constructive and not destructive manner whilst still remaining objective.

very brave man billy , giving them ammo to shoot you down .

at least i know you , good luck with it
i dont see any problem with using a small male spur for bait i havent had the need to yet but would not hesitate to if needs must. and have seen spur baits being used. but see bmacs point when you are getting plauged with spurs taking your bait it can be very annoying. i think this thread is reading like any angler fishing for skate be it someone that tags spurs or not would also use an hopefully UNTAGGED small male spur for bait i dont have a problem with it everyone uses fish for bait of whatever species why should spurs be any different they seem to be plentiful although some may say there not which in some areas maybe true but they are plentiful in areas where skate exist this is my own opinion and everybodys entitled to theres also but but i think the MAIN point is i wouldnt like to think that any hardcore taggers which i do not take part in would preach to anyone else about conservation when maybe SOME also dont mind using a spur for bait away from prying eyes. :secret:eek:n private boats i have my doubts.

I'm sorry but how can you tag a fish to gather evidence to help conserve the species but at the same time use the same species as bait to catch and tag a skate? Now I don't necessarily think using spurdogs as bait is terribly wrong. There seems to be plenty too catch but then to go and tag them doesn't make sense to me. Maybe I'm missing the point but as the OP claimed it is hypocritical.

CAPTAIN CHAOS 2
it was meant for a joke , as i know billy

and this thread is just full of **** and no worth reading like most on this site now .

the op stated in 1st post , then went to the usual crap you get
Like the Original Post or not, it quite clearly appears that he had a very good point.

Personally I couldn't care less what anyone uses for bait, although I would draw the line at tope, I think that tope are pretty damn cute and far too good for bait.

Fish rarely die of old age, they get eaten by something at some point in their lives, so I don't lose any sleep over it.....but then I don't bleat on 24/7 about ALL spurs being critically endangered, needing protected bla bla bla.....:blahblah:.... nor am I part of a regime which claims to be operating for the purpose of highlighting just these points.

Like many, spurs coming back to their old numbers would imo be an absolute nightmare, can't get away from them, can catch nothing else but them, nothing else gets a sniff at a bait.....thanks but no thanks. For me, pile them on as bait, your decision, but if you do then lose the halo, they just do not go together.

Imho if you do preach to people then you need to be whiter than white, grey is not the new white I am afraid.

The hypocrisy of it all is absolutely breathtaking, and for anyone to try and justify it is frankly ludicrous. I am happy for anyone to show me how it can possibly be seen as anything but. (this is a generalisation and not a dig at Billy in any shape or form, hats off to him for having the doo das to admit it)

Would someone from the SSTP happily go on the One Show or wherever and explain this interesting situation to their viewers, or explain it to the Heralds readers, or speak to Marine Scotland about it, or their funders at SNH, LEADER etc, imho if they have any sense they would not, I suspect that they would be absolutely crucified, and rightly so.........:eek:hmy:

But your quite happy to plaster half-truths all over a forum - which recieves much more viewers than the magazines...??? THATS hypocritical!

All I'm saying is, with lots of people looking forward to a tagging event you have damned them all before it's even started by using - lets be honest - vague details of what I am prosuming is a rumour you have heard.
i dont think it,s a case of damning everyone, i think its more that some skate anglers have come on here and been open and honest myself included . i haven,t used a spur for bait but would have no hesitation in doing so. but maybe some of the ones that havent replied which there are many feel they have something to hide.WHY
As for papers and magazines they CAN also be bad for printing half truths [ personal experience but not fishing related ] this is not to say you personally would do any such thing .
c,mon the spurs
as stated numerous times its a personal choice.

Dark Nights + Winter Months = Silly season on WSF.

some people need to go fishing rather than spending too much time staring at their PC's.
went fishing tonight back home without a line touching the water to rough turned the telly on rubbish far more interesting on here.

Was talking to a guy in the GAC and he was telling me that a mate of his was out Skate fishing with one of the Charter boats out of Oban. His mate caught a 12lb Spur and was stunned when the Skipper cut the thing up for bait. Now I know this is anecdotal and there is little information such as the Skippers name, but if it is true it's very irresponsible of the Skipper in question and sad in light of the recent publicity regarding Spur conservation. A fish of that weight is bound to be breeding age.
Hi all seen this old post makes you think:eek:hmy:
