OK it's taken a non-fishing activity to stir me into posting something on a site I've enjoyed reading for over two years, but what happened on Sunday at the Knap really got me .

I was on my kayak (sit on top) trying to stay out of the way of guys lines fishing from the pebs probably about 100yds out. Then some plonker decides to launch his lead which went over my head and to my left landing no more than 20yds from the boat.

Now either the guy just didn't look (?) or he did and thought it was funny. If you were there and saw what happened perhaps you know? Perhaps you are he? Either way I'm not happy.

Welcome to the site

sorry about the kayak incident but maybe it might have been better to address it there and then by paddling in and having a chat as your obviously annoyed about it

Well said Jon.
Also, perhaps it would have been well advised not to have been such a plonker and sat right in front of where people were fishing within reasonably easy casting range
It's a reasonably long beach, I'm sure there werent anglers every few yards along it's entire length?
20 yards? Yr lucky yr not a surfer at Oxwich or Llangennith, I'd have told the angler in question that he needs to brush up on his casting accuracy, lol.
Joking aside though....you put yourself in that position m8

Welcome to the site, pity under these circumstances. Now you will be aware of the distances some guys can hit when casting, and if you stay out an extra 50 yards or so you wont disturb the guys trying to fish.

How was the fishing anyway?

don't want to keep banging the same drum but as an ex-kayaker you really need to be aware of the beach guys and keep a decent buffer of distance between you, i'd say if your going past a beach that you know people hit a bait as far out as they can i'd try and stay to about 200 yards out...it only needs someone to do something stupid and the weight will turn into a projectile that can kill, and a crack off may go even further..

I would never cast towards a person or boat when fishing and would actively stop anybody I saw trying such a stupid activity!!! BUT I would be well peed off by your inconsiderate activities mate why should I have to stop fishing while you go thrashing about in the water doing your best to scare what few fish there were in front of me. You got plenty of sea out there without having to come in "avoiding anglers lines" as you put it.
There are a few Kayakers off this site who regularly fish responsibly around Barry area and use the water in harmony with the beach anglers it just needs a little thought and consideration by all users of the coastline.

consideration

kayaker - please consider how close you are to fellow anglers

fellow shore angler(s) consider if you hit the lad

WOULD YOU WANT TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR A DEATH?

wrong on both sides but ultimately the potential for a loss of life should be paramount. A "warning" cast could easily go astray.

Very well said Paul

Since when has a Yakker referred to his pride and joy as a boat ???

Me thinks there is something fishy here
You might be right Ken, notice no replies from OP

I was fishing the Knap on Sunday morning and saw exactly what happened. Let's be honest about this and admit that you were a bit closer in than the 100 yds that you stated.
The Angler in question's pendulum cast didn't go staraight out as planned and went a bit to the right but this was not intentional and any near miss could have been avoided if you had stayed a safe distance from the shore.
There were only a hanful of people fishing the Knap on Sunday and all bar two were fishing the eastern half of the beach (majority in line with the toilet block) so you had a huge amount of beach to use for paddling closer in. Also the way you reacted after the incident left a lot to be desired with your effing and blinding and staring daggers at all of the anglers you passed as you paddled away.

As no one was hurt I suggest that you take this as a lesson and in future don't come in so close when there are people fishing. The angler didn't do anything wrong apart from mis timing his cast.

I don't recommend anyone aims lead at surfers or kayakers however cast do go astray and you have put yourself in the way, how do you know that the angler was not casting to that spot in the 1st place and you have now stopped him casting to the spot he wanted to, who was there 1st you or the anglers

With rod & line for what? 100yrs? kayaking has become popular in the last how many years 10 maybe? So what happened on Sunday was something that the kayaker chose to himself, those blokes on the shore with the sticks in their hands were anglers, & you should know if you have any sense at all that they hurl rather heavy leads out as far as they can, to try to reach the fish.
Anybody who has taken up any seaborne activity within the last 100yrs will be familiar with beach anglers & what they do, so common sense if you are a kayaker, surfer, water skier, jetskier, boardsailor etc, is to stay outside their casting range, then they wont annoy you, & you wont annoy them, where is the problem? I would suggest that the problem does not lie with the angler but with YOU!:bangin:
So "up 100 & fire for effect"

right then fellas i was the caster in question on sunday so let me tell you exactly how the story goes ,i had got down the knap at 5 in the morn and was the only angler on there ,so started fishing managed a ray 1 st cast then carried on ,little while later a few more came down and i think there was about 12 fishing on there ,then a little bit later on in the day this kayaker comes along the whole length of knap beach well within casting range ,when he came in front of me i was getting ready to cast but i waited for him to pass and actually took a few steps to the left to avoid him ,the cast in question was no where near to him and behind him believe me if i had wanted to hit him i would have cast in front of him ,as it was this complete and utter plonker deceided to paddle past us all so he only has himself to blame ,if he thinks being 100 yrds offshore is ok hes got a lot to learn i am certainly not anywhere near the distance caster that some of the tournament boys are ,so perhaps he should think about what he is doing in future ,just maybe he should take a chill pill and try not to harbour a grudge ,tightlines foreshore

I agree with that, but maybe it was a bit rough further out and needed to stay in shore... or maybe he's not experienced and still learning.

On another note.. Id have picked up his line cut it and kept the lead... whats the worst that could happen lol. (joke btw for you uptight barsteward)

In my experience most people are wildly inaccurate at estimating distances over water. Usually distance is overestimated (especially when casting:laugh:). I wonder, therefore, if the kayaker was in fact much closer to the shore......and even more within casting distance. Up here, it's the wind and kite surfers who seem to be attracted to anglers. Like moths to a flame.....and one day with the same result:(
