Is it just me or is bait getting more expensive for less ?

I worked in a tackle shop once for a short time on a bait counter.
To be honest even then the bait wasn't much of a fair deal.
This was the prices at the begining of the year.

Peeler 60p each Average
Rag £3.00 for 10 Small
Rag 7's £3.00 for 7 Average
Lug £3.00 for 20 Small
Pointer Lug 4.00 for 10 Big

The peeler wasn't too bad. The Rag and Lug smalls were no bigger
than rizla papers. The 7's and pointers look like the exactly the same
when you go and dig for it.

Recently a few of us from the forum went fishing off the Island.
One of the lads bought a few packets of worms. He bought 2 packets of 7's, he only got 5 worms and that was for £3.50. £7.00 in total for 10 worms. None of which were as big as the ones we digged for, and it cost more than ever.

I really am considering always digging my bait for the future as you just dont get enough worms for your money.

Imagine if most people went out digging for their bait for just a few
months. I would expect that the prices for bait would drop alot
as there would be little demand for them. Supply and Demand = Cost.
If they keep putting their price up then thats just being greeding and
targeting what they think are lazy customers that will pay any price as they cant be bothered to dig. :banghead:

During one low tide on the last dig there was close to 200 worms in the pot and all were 7's and above, some of which fit real nice on my 6/0
:victory:

If anyone is finding that their usual bait supplier is putting up their prices please feel free to post the prices and what you get for them.

Also if anyone is wanting to join a few of us for a bait dig feel free to put a post.

:victory:

i know it is not easy for evreyone to get their own bait, and i often have to get it from a shop..but in my opinion when ever i get my own bait i get better results when fishing..i always dig my own lug throughout the winter months,at thorpe bay and find they are there in abundance and are huge.the sort of worms you can never get from a shop.plus when you buy bait from a shop they are always going to give you their oldest stock.

Ye interesting the price of bait these days never been digging for it tho, i will certianly considor the thought.

All i know is i pay (iirc)
Lug £4 score
Dungie Black £3 for 10
Sand eels £3 per pack
Rag (can not remember price yet, but expensive)

I'll try and get a price update at some point, it would prove interesting to see what other peeps are being charged in our neck of the woods.

Digging and collecting your own bait is a great idea.......

IF, you have the time..... live near good digging areas.... are physically fit enough to dig the bait..... can plan your fishing trips well in advance....don't mind digging in all weathers.

IF the answer to all these IF's is "no problem, then go for it.

I dont dig or collect my own worms anymore as I dont have the time what with business, family, following the mighty spurs, golf and other things.

I occassionally collect peelers but have had enough of scrotes clearing my traps out.

I pay the following.

Blow - £4/score, usually a good size
Rag - £5/score, these are usually huge
Peelers - 90p/crab, I cant and wont complain as my supplier is excellent.

I do dig my own bait, and have more than covered my costs for garden fork, wellies and buckets etc. I also have a bait fridge which means I can dig a few days in advance.
There are downsides to digging your own bait, such as finding time as I do dig at night with a Tiga headlamp as the oly light available. Also the weather can cause nightmares with a strong south westerly keepin gthe water close to the shore making digging a nightmare, as can rain and snow.
However if you can dig your own bait, then you have no excuse if you don't catch with your own bait.

Bait collecting aint easy. Its fun if you have the time to do it and is sometimes more fun than the actual fishing Sesh. I take my hat off to the guys that dig/pump worms on a daily basis and i have found that if you can find a couple reliable diggers close to your given area Dont EVER let em down with your orders. (IE) always keep em sweet with the odd prezzie or two come christmas time. IF you look after them they will help you when bait is scarce. :notworthy:victory:

Its fun when you are digging lug and you come across a couple of king rag, or you are getting 2-3 lug per fork. Also finding new worm holding areas makes up for the rainy, cold weather and the times when you get bugger all bait

Hi mate. In spite of what many peeps might say Fishing is expensive if you have to travel more than a few miles. It all depends on how much you want it. Many a time I have read reports on here from lads beyond the S/E area that have come to Dungie and enjoyed the Expeience. I live 50 miles from this Famous venue and an Average trip costs 40 pound plus Before you have actually caught a fish. Fuel and Bait are expensive. But actually being there is PRICELESS.
