Hope Springs Eternal
When I stepped outside to go to work last Monday morning, the air had a distinct autumnal feel to it and my mind drifted towards thoughts of the coming Cod season. By Thursday and a change in the wind direction from East to South West I was readying myself to get after the Cod again. Looking at the weather, Friday evening over low water looked perfect. I had made up my mind, the first diary installment was soon to be written.
The whole of Friday whilst at work, time seemed to be going backwards and by 4.30pm I could take no more. I had to go, the Ness was calling me.
The beach was surprisingly empty, given that the current weather pattern would soon revert back to Easterlies and once again kill off the fishing, not that I was complaining!
My first cast indicated a good run of ebb tide and soon my line was getting dragged round by weed. I wound in to find a sea rat hidden under a mass of stringy snotty weed.
Second cast produced another.
Baiting up a spare trace, I noticed the tiniest of bites and proceeded to watch it develop. The result? Just about the happiest person on the beach.
Only a small one, just over a pound, but a very very happy Shirley.
The sea rat onslaught continued down to low water. More or less on dead low I had another interesting bite. I would be fibbing if I said it slack lined me, but the rod tip did straighten a little and I soon had Codling number two joining the other on to the shingle to the right of my seat box.
I fished on till the tide was well on its way in, but only managed to continue the sea rat fest.
So, all in all, I am very pleased. First Cod session and I have doubled last years horror show of a season.
Yes, they are only small, but they mean the world to me
I do not see a decent weather pattern coming up any time soon, so no idea when Ill get a chance to try again. Lets hope we get a good low pressure front move in and really kick things off.
