hi,

has anyone fished the area where trefor pier once stood for huss?

a disabled friend and myself are fishing that way and as it's easy access it'd be a good venue for us to fish.

thanks for any help.

Would have thought that's a very good choice mate, as heard of many huss in the past off the pier. My mate lost a gigantic one, which we struggled to get up the rocks, in that neck of the woods.

The tricky part will be getting them hooked well enough to hoist them up the wall but not leaving them long enough that they become deep hooked. Big circles hooks, 6/0, 8/0, could be your best bet to avoid that.

I use squid bluey or squid mackerel combos for huss but had them on peeler too. Some use whiting but not tried them specifically for huss myself yet.

Use, as a minimum, 80lb snoods as anything less and your risking them chewing through it, plus it gives you a bit more insurance if you end up hooking a decent conger.

One more thing, don't know how much debris is left on the sea bed from the demolition but it may be snaggy. I've recently been using 6oz ball leads in rough ground and now get alot more back than 6oz wired grippers. If it is really snaggy use a rotten bottom set up.

Had loads of Huss from the old pier. Must be worth a pop.

As for landing them, if you don't have a drop net, I'd have thought it would be a straightforward issue to "walk" them along the inside of the harbour wall and beach them.

Fish baits should work best, from slithers of Mack (had them on a size 6 hook intended for mini-species) all the way up to live-baited Whiting. Obviously the smaller baits will almost certainly see you plagued by doggies.

Curiously enough, never been bitten off by one, even on 15lb snoods.
