:sneaky2: I've never had a really bad beach rod because I took up beach fishing late in life. I had a few rods I couldn't really cast with but that was down to me thinking dearer rods would cast further, not, what rod suited my casting style, or lack of, so it has to be a Vortex boat rod, I think the shop owner had it saved just for me. I explained that I was going out to the West Indies for 6 months and I wanted a rod to handle sharks as I had lighter rods from fishing locally but needed something heavier. Paired it up with a Penn Senator 4/0 and 50lb Dacron, a butt pad and some wire traces and I was set. Anchored off some island and was duty so couldn't go ashore, ideal. Lovely night, got the chefs to throw all the leftover food in the water and put a raw chicken carcase on the hook. 1/2 hour later had a good run, struck and the fight was on. Got a shark about 150lb on the surface, just dragging it to the ship's ladder when the rod snapped just above the reel. I went down the ladder, unhooked the shark, took the reel off the rod and threw the 2 pieces into the sea. Bought a cracking rod for half the money from the American PX at Roosevelt Roads in Puerto Rico and caught loads of big fish on it over the years, probably still got it somewhere.:sneaky2:
