Which knot is strongest?

I have been taking my lass and some friends fishing and they have been struggling on occasion with knots and knots holding. I wanted to start them off on the basics as my dad/grandad did with me. Obviously the same rules apply as to lubricating the knots and the line quality etc, but when attaching a swivel to the mainline or the weight length, would you use a blood knot or a surgeons loop for strength and reliability?

Hi ,

this is one of the best fishing knots i know , i use it for almost everything, from hooks to swivels and with either thin or thick mono line : VTS_01_1.AVI - YouTube

Hope this helps ,

I'm glad it's got a name, I've been using a variant of this for a leader knot to braid, using 6-8 turns in the braid and one overhand knot in the leader. It grips the leader very well, no slipage.

From IGFA yearbook, Palomar quote "consistently the strongest knot known to hold terminal tackle"
I've always used the double grinner or uni knot. Never tried the palomar but, looking at the animated knot link, the palomar has the line doubled through the eye or swivel etc which might explain the reported strength? It also looks quite easy to tie so I'm going to give it a try. Cheers.

Palomar is also good for getting snood lengths right as you don't have a load of knot to tighten down

Tried the Palomar last night with varying degrees of satisfaction. For attaching hooks when using big baits its fine with 30lb line, anything smaller and I reverted back to the bloodknot. As before I had trouble sliding the ragworms over the bulky knot. I will continue to test it out on hooklengths.
