This isnt meant to be enormously controvertial, so bear with me . . but. . .

why do people get excited about fishing for Dabs? Am i missing something? Do they eat well or something? Or is it just that there isnt much else around our coast at the moment to catch?

This is a genuine question, as i don't get it !??!?!?

Ok - starting to make a little sense - didnt reaslise that they were a good eat.

I caught a few recently on a short session off Aberporth beach. They were only small, and were good fun on light gear. My little-un loved it.

What size do they get up to . . and what size would be worth keeping (either for bait later in the year or for eating ?) ?

this could go on. i'd like to know why people fish for rays. at least flounder and dab are a decent meal.

Small eyed, when poached in milk and fried for the last few minutes, is quite tasty aswell. Gotta be poached first though coz if you just try frying it from the start it goes like rubber and you just chew and chew:thumbdown

But if you are gonna take one take a male and leave the females:thumbs:

if i thought i could skin one, i'd be after them too! there's just something about catching your own food. a primitive thing, i guess.

not all of us fish to eat.

the question that i always get asked, whatever the conditions, is "are you after bass?" i then reel off a list of all the other things we hope to catch.

down our way there are only two species according to most - bass and mackerel. while they are fine things to catch variety is the spice of life and i'll go after whatever excites me. this year mullet will be a high priority species as will smoothound, tope and rays.

Are you saying that there's more than Mackerel & Bass round here? :eek:hmy:

No, right enough, but then I do fish to eat...

Thanks for this thread
My last summer trip on the Dominator was October
when we were out the trip was planned driftin for Bass
with westerlies forcast 2-3beaufort
after a few Bass and a few drifts it became to rough and Wayne said our best option until the tide turned from wind against, was an hour
or so dabbin in Oxwich. Dont think any of the six were to excited at the prospect!
But i have to say it was excellant fun my 12-20lb pirranah was perfect landing i recall at least a dozen scrappy fighters the rest of the crew caught well to and i think 9-10 of the better ones found there way into "the Box"
The last of which was tea tonight and the Mrs had the last Gurnard (Her Favourite Fish) with a bottle of Breton Cidre (between us)!!!
Lovelly Grub just like Summer!!
Cant wait till Sunday (Oxwich Meet) to Bag another dozen !!
See you all there

Stevie-boy - yes, it looks like we're gonna target the little blighters, until we get a couple big enough to eat.

All - is Oxwich the best bet around the Gower, or do they tip-up at other venues also?

Other option is a little trip down into deepest darkest West Wales for a dabble!!

"West is Best" as the Grav would say!!!

Take it that was the day I came out with you?.. As you say we were all a little reluctant at first but the little blighters proved to be really good fun.

Haven't put my name down for the sunday meet but if I get the chance to make it will see you sunday. All the best mate
